  • 🌟𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗯𝘆𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱!🎉 During 2024, we achieved important milestones in our research and teaching initiatives. Our specific lines of research based on a cultural approach to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, together with the design and implementation of co-productive processes has been expanded and further consolidated. With this, the team reflected on what their highlights for 2024 were. The CSTS team has also built new and solid collaborations with researchers, funders, and practitioners around the world, as shown in the many presentations we did at the ITD Conference 2024, EASST Conference 2024, and EUSPRI 2024, among others. So what does 2025 have to offer? Well, we are delighted to welcome Nathalie Dupin on board as a postdoctoral researcher in January, who will be working on a new project Practice-based Research, investigating research practices, outputs, and impacts in Belgium-Flanders, Poland, and Switzerland. We also look forward to hosting the SSH Energy 2025 workshop on 16 and 17 June 2025, and are already hard at work to make sure we offer a workshop that inspires critical thinking on “Futuring inter- and transdisciplinary energy research, for whom, by whom?”. The CSTS team will be involved in a new course “Foundations of Science, Technology and Society”, co-organised with the D-GESS. This introduction to the field of STS is open to all Master and PhD students at ETH. It aims to offer students a space to learn conceptual, theoretical, and methodological approaches from the field of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) and how to apply these to issues of their area of study, research, and practice. Later in the summer, the team will offer a summer school within the ENHANCE Alliance titled “Inter- and Transdisciplinary Integration in Research, Policy and Practice”. We have had a lovely 2024, and are so delighted that our team is growing in size and range of research topics. We especially thank our collaborators, research partners, and funders (SNSF, SFOE, European Commission, and ETH Zurich) for showing an interest in our work and wish you a splendid festive season and a warm welcome into the new year! • ✨ It's throwback .... Friday! A bit more than one month ago we spent one week in Utrecht at the #ITD24. Time to highlight some more work of the CSTS team that was presented there! 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 used the opportunity to present her PhD research in which she assesses the role of norms in inter- and transdisciplinary research and development of socio-technical systems. Norms - understood as approved standards or forms of behaviour that are accepted by a majority of people - allow her to explore how governance processes are normalised, which may lead to an improved foundation of inclusive governance mechanisms in research and development processes, especially in the case of emerging technologies. Anne-Sophie Schaltegger presented preliminary findings of her ethnographic research into the assessment of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects in Switzerland, in the context of her PhD. Using the concept of values, she showed how researchers in inter- and transdisciplinary projects navigate assessment processes that do not always accommodate for the specific needs of collaborative, boundary-spanning research practices. Bianca Vienni-Baptista contributed to the conference in numerous presentations and workshops. Notably she was also part of a panel on commonalities and divergences in inter- and transdisciplinary thought. Appreciating the heterogeneity in the practices and conceptualisations of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity is central to her work - by highlighting aspects like the skill of toolkitting, she showed how creativity and a dedication to learning connect streams in interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity and enable to leverage differences. • 🌟 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 We're happy to celebrate the recent work of Valeria Merlo, who completed her master thesis in the CSTS group. Her thesis, entitled "The Role of Emotions and Affection in Interdisciplinary Research", explores an often-overlooked aspect of scientific collaboration - the emotional and affective dimensions that shape interdisciplinary research. Her thesis is part of the SNSF project INTERSECTIONS (https://lnkd.in/gYGnfRud), which investigates intersections of practices, culture(s) and policy in collaborative knowledge production. 📚 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁? Interdisciplinary research involves high levels of collaboration and integration between different fields of knowledge, often requiring researchers to 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 and engage in 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Understanding the emotional and affective dimensions is crucial for improving the conditions under which scientists conduct such research and for addressing urgent environmental and societal challenges. 💡 Valeria developed a theoretical framework that integrates the 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 with the 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 🔬 Ethnographic fieldwork conducted for this thesis reveals that researchers in interdisciplinary collaborations must navigate the comfort-discomfort continuum in 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗳 (𝗶𝗻)𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: disciplinary, career, and interpersonal (in)securities. 💚 Emotion regulation strategies to navigate these areas include 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 and 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀. The findings show how these strategies influence researchers' appraisals of emotional experiences. Read more about Valeria’s findings on our webpage: https://lnkd.in/gm3pArR9 🌈 🌈 🌈 Valeria wishes to extend her thanks to the group members Bianca Vienni-Baptista and Anne-Sophie Schaltegger for their dedicated mentorship and guidance throughout this research journey. #InterdisciplinaryResearch #AffectiveLabour #EmotionalLabour #LearningZoneModel #EmotionRegulation

Are you interested in doing a Master's thesis on transdisciplinary methods for an inclusive, human-centred open innovation ecosystem for energy system planning? 📃 𝗪𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 in which we would like to develop and test transdisciplinary collaboration methods for applying the inclusive human-centred open innovation ecosystem to the SWEET CoSi project. SWEET CoSi focuses on the interactions between society and the energy system. For this purpose, different social research areas (economics, social sciences and humanities) are being connected with engineering energy modeling and a direct exchange with relevant stakeholders is being established. Together, various scenarios will be tested and models developed that could lead to socially desirable visions of the future. This master thesis will be supervised by Bianca Vienni-Baptista (ETH Zürich), Sarah Barber (OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences), and Stephanie Briers (ETH Zürich). Don't hesitate to get in touch in case you want to learn more, and 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸! We are looking forward to hearing from you.

  • ☀️ We have a recommendation for your Friday evening commute! Even if you are ready for the weekend, we hope you will enjoy this blog post Bianca Vienni-Baptista wrote for the Schweizerischer Wissenschaftsrat - Conseil Suisse de la Science - Swiss Science Council SSC: https://lnkd.in/eV4ywHz9 💭 Not convinced yet? Here is a little teaser: Momentum is building for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research to address societal challenges both globally and in Switzerland. However, conflicting messages and unclear understanding of these approaches could limit their effectiveness. To maximize their impact, funders and policymakers need to better understand and integrate these approaches into research, funding, and policy efforts.
