What’s up at our COMPAMED booth? Michiel Stiers explains the story of the unmet medical need to scale ventilator capacity and how to manage it. The team behind the project gathered at our booth at COMPAMED to showcase how this KU Leuven research evolved into a hardware product that can increase our preparedness and save lives. Here’s the story: Born from an urgent need during the COVID-19 crisis and first tested at Ziekenhuis Geel, ISV enables individualized airflow for two patients on a single ventilator. The core of this technology is the ‘Flow Modulator’, a hardware component ensuring safe, effective dual support. ISV is a product of true co-creation, combining emergency healthcare expertise from Prof. Dr. Marc Sabbe and his team at KU Leuven and UZ Leuven, airflow insights from Royal Military Academy, Belgium, software support by CODEVID, and hardware development and scalability expertise by our engineers and designers at Comate Engineering & Design. 🎓Yesterday, we shared an inspiring article with KU Leuven Alumni from the Faculty of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences (Alloreki). It’s all about the story of Levi, a young man living with cerebral palsy, who's found new confidence and independence through the CoMoveIT Smart head-steering system. Our message? To shout it from the rooftops that every great hardware idea starts small - often in a classroom or at a university. This technology actually began as a research project led by Professor Elegast Monbaliu at KU Leuven’s Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences. Monbaliu and his team were driven by a powerful mission: to give greater freedom and autonomy to people with severe motor impairments. They envisioned a system that could adapt to users' involuntary movements, empowering individuals like Levi to move independently. Here we are with even more exciting news from ONWARD Medical! We're thrilled to share that their ARC-EX System has been recognized as one of TIME Magazine's Best Inventions of 2024! ONWARD Medical’s ARC-EX therapy uses electrical stimulation - applied externally with electrodes - to effectively boost the brain’s signals of people with spinal cord injuries. For most people with a spinal cord injury, they do not have enough strong brain signals for movement. Luckily, this medical hardware device serves as an amplifier. Well done, team ONWARD! 💪 This recognition is also a tribute to our dedicated team at Comate, who played an essential role in bringing this life-changing device to reality.
