  • Another milestone reached in Brussels, residents directly involved in the administration of CLTB, putting CLT principles into practice! [EN] Massandjé Bamba, a resident of Arc-en-Ciel, and Pascale Athey, candidate-owner, were elected presidents of the Administrative Body (OA) of the non-profit organisation Community Land Trust Brussels. Their appointment marks an important milestone for the CLTB: for the first time, it is the representatives of the inhabitants of the Administrative Body who take on this responsibility! 💬 "Participatory management as advocated within the CLTB Administrative Body, i.e. inviting representatives of the public authorities, civil society and inhabitants to the same discussion table, is already something quite unprecedented for an organisation, let alone a presidency provided by representatives of the inhabitants. Once again, we have proof that the notions of participation and inclusion so dear to the CLTB are not just theory, but a palpable reality. In any case, Massandjé and I are honored by the trust that has been placed in us to take on this position. We are fully aware of this and will gladly take on this responsibility." – Pascale Athey.

  • Today, during the hearing of the first-ever Commissioner-designate for Energy and Housing, Dan Jorgensen of Denmark, the European CLT Network will be listening closely if the Commission will commit to tackling financialisation of housing as part of the European Affordable Housing Plan (EAHP) to deliver a long-lasting supply of affordable and sustainable housing units. If the new Commissioner is bold enough to commit to this, Community Land Trusts (CLT) can substantially contribute to achieving the objectives of the EAHP to boost supply, increase inclusion, and improve governance of housing programmes across the EU. Tune in at 14:30 CET today: https://lnkd.in/euZv2_DA

  • 🎉🔔 RFP Alert: Would you like to help us demonstrate the impacts and benefits of Community Land Trusts across Europe? The European CLT Network is looking for consultant support with expertise in impact measurement and communication to lead the development of our network's first pan-European Impact Report for publication in September 2025. Community Land Trusts are a powerful solution to the complex challenge of delivering affordable and sustainable housing in the context of a Just Transition. CLTs address this challenge by offering a long-term strategy for community empowerment, and economic resilience, as well as environmental stewardship.    If you are interested in this opportunity to detail the impacts of CLTs in Europe, please submit your proposal by 12 November (end of day) to europe@cltb.be with the subject line 'ECLTN Impact Report RfP response + your name/company name'. See all the details via the link or PDF below. Or alternatively, please share with your network! https://lnkd.in/emJZAZsF

  • Community involvement in housing and development projects can turn NIMBYs into YIMBYs according to this Sunday Times article on #CommunityLandTrusts In the article, our Board Member Tom Chance from the England & Wales CLT Netowrk highlighted that "Local people are increasingly invested in what happens in their community. Belonging to a CLT empowers them." The article adds in the UK context that 'Each CLT is unique, rooted to a particular location, but runs on similar lines. It will either build and develop its own homes or work in partnership with other community organisations, housing associations and local councils.' Our network is working with policymakers and partners to make CLTs a mainstream solution across Europe to help deliver inclusive and community-driven housing and development that is permanently affordable and sustainable. https://lnkd.in/eQM97pdX

This is quite a milestone: seeing CLTs recognised in London local planning policy. 👏 👏 👏 In Southwark Council’s Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), Councillor Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, writes about “our aspiration in Southwark to deliver… Community Land Trusts”. A publicly stated aspiration is a start! Vitally for us, the document cites CLTs and discount market sale homes as “affordable housing which the council considers to meet the genuine needs of our residents”. The SPD also recognises the need for affordability in perpetuity and intermediate affordable housing, ie priced above social housing but below private housing. Exactly what we create! 🏡🏡🏡 There is support for CLTs in other local planning policies nationwide eg East Cambridgeshire and Cornwall. But we’re pleased to see this first for London. The SPD is open for 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟳 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿; please take a look and comment 👉 https://lnkd.in/em66BHsv Rural Urban Synthesis Society Greenwich Citizens Housing Forest Community Land Trust community led housing london Gida Housing Cooperative Community Assets for Society and Housing (CASH) #affordablehomes #communitylandtrust #communityledhousing

Yesterday, the European Community Land Trust Network (ECLTN) and Community Land Trust Brussels (CLT), had the pleasure of welcoming Mario Nava Director-General of DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (EMPL) for the European Commission to learn more in-person about the benefits and value that CLTs can deliver. It was also a pleasure to officially welcome Dyfed Aubrey of UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) to Brussels during the visit! Following the visit, Mario Nava, Director General of DG EMPL stated that "Ensuring access to social and affordable housing for vulnerable people is a priority. Community-based innovative initiatives, like the Brussels Community Land Trust Calico project, are an example of how to achieve this while strengthening local communities. I am happy that EU funding contributed to set-up the project, paving the way for more of these successful initiatives in the future.” ECLTN hopes that the engaging visit and fruitful discussions acts to strengthen our partnership and as a catalyst for greater cooperation with EU policymakers to help make CLTs a mainstream solution to housing and social issues across Europe.
