Did you know that the food and drink industry is Europe's top manufacturing powerhouse, driving almost €1,2 trillion in turnover - outpacing even automotive and machinery sectors? Here’s why we must prioritise and invest in this sector: 🔷 𝐉𝐨𝐛𝐬, 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 & 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: Employing 4.7 million people, the industry is a cornerstone of EU livelihoods. It sustains rural economies, fosters regional cohesion, and is a critical sector for the security and stability of Europe's societies. 🔷 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: The EU is the world’s top exporter of food and drink products, with €182 billion in exports and an €80 billion trade surplus. Strengthening this sector cements our competitive edge globally. 🔷 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫: The industry is key to delivering on the EU Green Deal, reducing emissions, and innovating sustainable food systems. But achieving these goals requires targeted support for SMEs and investment in scaling up regenerative agriculture, green technologies and circular infrastructure. 🔷 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: With 21.8% of household expenditure going toward food and drinks, this sector directly affects EU citizens’ quality of life. Supporting the industry means investing in food security, affordability and innovation that matches evolving consumer preferences. Supporting this vital sector will boost jobs, trade, and sustainable growth. Let’s ensure it gets the attention it deserves. Today we visited the factory in Hagenau where Mars produces the iconic M&Ms (distributed from there to 40 countries). Thanks to the proximity to Strasbourg, we could host a delegation from the European Parliament. The happy faces of the pictures below tell how enjoyable this initiative was (also for our very own Dirk Jacobs and Silvia Lofrese)! We talked about responsible supply chains, investments in innovation, trade within and outside the EU single market, labour and skills, food safety and more. Thanks Mars for having us, and in particular Caroline Ploux and Enzo REULET for your help in organising this! Thanks MEPs Stefan Köhler, Maria Grapini and Catarina Vieira, as well as the staff of MEPs Veronika Vrecionova, Stefano Cavedagna and Ondřej Krutílek for your active and interested participation! Nice way to wrap up 2024!
