EU-funded project to improve traffic and mobility management

About us

TANGENT is an EU-funded Horizon2020 project. It develops new complementary tools for optimising traffic operations in a coordinated and dynamic way. The project coordinator is the University of Deusto. The cities involved are Lisbon, Great Manchester, Rennes, and Athens. TANGENT helps these cities achieve a 10% reduction travel time, 8-10% reduction in CO2 emissions, 5% reduction of accidents, 10-15% increase in use of public transport. TANGENT takes into consideration automated/non-automated vehicles, passengers, and freight transport. It allows the knowledge and management of the mobility flows among the transport modes and enables the implementation and integration of innovative mobility solutions, services, and business models. The project contributes to more efficient traffic management, by reducing congestion, mitigate environmental effects through CO2 reduction, increasing safety and economic advantage.

It’s incredibly gratifying to receive official recognition for the quality and impact of our work in a research project! I’m proud to share that our paper, “Intelligent Urban Traffic Management via Semantic Interoperability across Multiple Heterogeneous Mobility Data Sources,” has won the Best Paper Award in the In-Use Track at the International Semantic Web Conference (#ISWC2024). 🚗 About the Paper The paper showcases the solution developed by Cefriel within the TANGENT Project, which facilitates seamless collaboration among mobility stakeholders by harmonising and merging heterogeneous data sources. 🔑 Key Contributions The solution enables and simplifies: - the collection of large-scale historical data for training machine learning models to support traffic prediction; - the access to both static and real-time data to power innovative applications for traffic managers. A special thanks to Mario Scrocca, the scientific and technical leader behind this solution, and to all my talented colleagues Marco Grassi, Valentina Carriero, Irene Celino, Alessio Carenini, Gianluca Gizzi, Andrea Fiano, Antonia Azzini for their invaluable contributions. 🙏 I am also grateful to our project partners, especially Tiago Dias and Ana V. Silva, for their collaboration in testing and using the solution to empower the future of traffic management tools.
