Weather in Turin might have been chilly, but the M42 #PEACOC meeting heated up with discussions around the various routes our project is exploring to turn waste streams into value. A special thanks to our colleagues at Centro Ricerche Fiat [Group Stellantis] for hosting our consortium meeting and giving us a tour of their impressive #research facilities. 💡After demonstrating the various technologies at lab scale, it was about time to show the progress achieved at pilot level. Easier said than done, but our partners are pushing hard in the last stretch to complete the assembly operations and test functionality. 🌍 A fruitful month of collaboration and innovation! 🌍 Marco Bianchini, PhD, a researcher from LOMARTOV SL, recently completed a productive one-month visiting stay with us at the Université de Liège. This collaboration took place within the framework of the CHem PGM project, a groundbreaking initiative focused on advancing sustainable technologies for recovering Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). During his stay, Marco worked closely with our team, Senior Researcher Mohamed Aâtach more particularly, to evaluate the environmental performance of novel PGM recovery technologies using the Life Cycle Assessment (#LCA) methodology. This critical assessment helps ensure that these innovative recovery processes align with sustainability goals and deliver real environmental benefits. This visiting stay underscores the power of collaboration between research institutions and industry partners in driving impactful results. We are proud to officially announce our participation to the European HORIZON CiSMA project titled “Circular Steel targeting Mass Market Applications”. CiSMA brings together a consortium of 12 partners and benefits from a €4.49 million grant awarded by the European Commission. CiSMA is developed under the leadership of Eurecat - Technology Centre, a Spanish leading Technology Centre based in Catalonia, and the second largest private research organization in Southern Europe. CiSMA will foster the introduction of scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel products into mass-market sheet metal consumer goods with high-quality requirements. The European iron and steel industry aims to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 50% compared to 1990 levels by 2030. EAF is a key technology to achieve these ambitions as: 1. It is capable of reducing emissions by >75 % when compared to Blast Furnace processes ; 2. It can work with up to 100 % scrap charges. However, trace deleterious elements present in the available fluxes of scrap affect steel properties, and notably formability, strength, fracture toughness, fatigue, surface chemistry and hydrogen embrittlement. CiSMA will leverage disruptive technologies to maximize the use of low-quality scrap as feed for EAF installations. The focus will be on the separation of undesired copper (Cu) inclusions. Through the CiSMA project, ULiège will expand knowledge in Cu sorting contributing to the use of scrap as a Sustainable Raw Material. This project exemplifies our commitment to advancing the #CircularEconomy and supporting the #Decarbonization of the steel sector. We are proud to celebrate Lucie Nélissen, one of our talented students from the Faculty of Applied Sciences (Faculté des Sciences Appliquées - ULiège), who recently completed her Master's thesis in collaboration with the GeMMe Research Group and received the prestigious CRM Group Award. Her thesis, titled "Exploring Ultrasound-Assisted Cementation to Enhance the Recovery of Platinum Group Metals from Process Streams", marks a significant contribution to sustainable recovery of metallic resources. As part of her research journey, she had the invaluable opportunity to spend time at Monolithos Catalysts & Recycling Ltd. in Athens, where she was mentored by our colleague Mohamed Aâtach, who guided her both during her stay in Greece and throughout her internship at our lab. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to her academic supervisor, Prof. Stoyan Gaydardzhiev, for his ongoing support and guidance. Zinc's inherent sustainability and the sustainable production of zinc could comprise a college course. Still IZA's Associate Director of Sustainable Development Sabina Grund managed to cover a good portion of zinc's sustainability story in a single lecture at the University of Liège in Belgium, where some 30 #AMIR and #EMerals students learned how zinc products contribute to the energy transition; how the zinc industry ensures harmonized and transparent carbon footprint reporting; and what impact opportunities exist for the zinc industry to maximize zinc circularity and efficiently close recycling loops. For Sabina, “A day at the University inspires and motivates me. I enjoy exchanging views with the scientists like Eric PIRARD, Jean-Francois Nivart, and Philippe Giaro as well as hearing the comments and questions from the students.” This is Sabina’s third zinc talk at the university. #zinc #ZincForTheFuture #circularity #sustainability 

🔋 Debrief de la rencontre "Recyclage des batteries en fin de vie : opportunités et défis" organisée ce vendredi 25 octobre au RISE (ULiège)🔋 Ce vendredi matin, quelques collègues du GeMMe ont assisté à cette courte conférence, organisée par LIEGE CREATIVE (ULiège - RISE) en collaboration avec Etudes & Expansion. L'événement, une première dans le cadre d'une initiative commune, soutenue par Anne-Sophie Nyssen, Rectrice de l'ULiège, reflète un partenariat inédit entre les mondes académique et industriel. 🎤 Deux intervenant-es phares : Abdelfattah Mahmoud, responsable batteries chez GREEnMat (ULiege), a partagé des avancées de son laboratoire universitaire, actif dans le développement de matériaux en lien étroit avec l’industrie. La moitié des chercheurs et chercheuses du GREEnMat travaillent dans le domaine des batteries, reflétant ainsi l’engagement de GREEnMat dans la transition énergétique. Faidjiba Loe-Mie, chef de projets R&D chez HYDROMETAL Belgium, filiale du groupe JGI-HYDROMETAL, a présenté les stratégies de l'entreprise pour la valorisation de produits complexes non-ferreux, et particulièrement concernant la chaîne de valeur du recyclage des batteries. La session de Q&A a permis à des experts et expertes de premier plan d'alimenter le débat autour de la thématique du jour, notamment Pierre COLSON (GREEnMat), xuan wang et Benedicte Robertz d'Umicore, ainsi que Michèle Batutiako du GeMMe. Nous sommes heureux d’avoir pu compter sur la présence de nos collègues Walter Rivera, Imane Mouzouri, Michèle Batutiako, Philippe Giaro et Emilie Flament du GeMMe pour représenter notre groupe de recherche et contribuer aux échanges autour de ces enjeux majeurs. "Rien ne se perd..." 🎉Le GeMMe participe à l’exposition "Des idées plein la Terre" à l'Aquarium-Museum de Liège ! 🌍 En 2024, la Société géologique de Belgique, fondée à Liège en 1874, fête ses 150 ans d’existence. Dans le cadre de la célébration de cet anniversaire, #Réjouisciences (Université de Liège) et la Socété géologique de Belgique proposent au grand public l'exposition temporaire "Des idées plein la Terre", à découvrir de septembre 2024 à mars 2025, à l'Aquarium-Muséum / Maison de la Science à Liège. Le Pr. Eric PIRARD, membre du comité scientifique, et le GeMMe ont contribué activement à l’élaboration d’un pan de cette exposition dédié aux ressources primaires, à l'économie circulaire et au recyclage des métaux. Ce projet met en avant l’importance de repenser notre consommation de matières premières pour un avenir plus durable. 🌱🔄 Cette initiative s’inscrit dans le cadre de la troisième mission de l'université, aux côtés de l'enseignement et de la recherche : le service à la société. Par cette collaboration, nous renforçons notre engagement en matière de médiation scientifique et de vulgarisation pour sensibiliser tous les publics aux enjeux environnementaux et aux ressources.
