About us

Debswana is the largest private sector employer in Botswana, with more than 4 000 staff members. These are mainly found on mining sites, along with just over 5 000 fixed-term contractors and a small staff complement at the Debswana Corporate Centre in Gaborone, Botswana’s capital. Diamond mining operations are located at Orapa, Letlhakane, Damtshaa (OLDM) and Jwaneng. These four mines have contributed significantly to the economic growth of Botswana, as well as producing revenues responsible for lifting the country from one of Africa’s least developed to an international development success story. Botswana is now a middle-income country independent in means as well as name.Debswana is a key player in the national economy of Botswana.

Running from November 25 to December 10, the initiative includes targeted activities and awareness sessions in the mine, township, and community, aiming to educate, empower, and inspire collective action. The mine emphasizes the importance of partnerships, community engagement, and sustainable solutions to tackle GBV while fostering understanding and promoting dialogue for a safer, violence-free society. Participants are encouraged to join and support the campaign’s vision of zero tolerance for violence in all its forms.

During the visit, project experts shared how JUP will enable the mine to transition from open-pit mining to underground operations. This shift will ensure the continued extraction of diamonds, extending the mine’s operational life well into the future. JUP is pivotal in sustaining Jwaneng Mine’s role as a major contributor to Botswana’s economy. Debswana remains committed to the project’s success, highlighting its importance for the company, the nation, and generations to come.

The kit included 50 tablets, 50 headphones, 2 Raspberry Pi servers, a video projector and screen, a laptop, 11 multi-socket adaptors, and 2 dust and waterproof cases. Additionally, Debswana employees and business partners contributed blankets, sheets, pillows, mattresses, school shoes with socks, internet routers, dust bins, photocopying machines, and hair clippers, totaling over P350,000. At the handover, Senior Mining Manager Pabalelo Nkhwalume highlighted that the Digital Schools Programme aims to enhance students' engagement with STEM products and improve educational outcomes at Mosu Primary School. This initiative aligns with Debswana’s value of 'Show we care' and supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 which calls for Quality Education. Orange Botswana's Acting Legal and Corporate Affairs Director, Patrick Yane, emphasized their commitment to including remote communities in the digital space, regardless of their location.

Supported by the Jwaneng Mine Corporate Affairs Department through employee volunteerism under the Anglo-American Ambassadors for Good program, the three-day training was done to empower 32 participants with essential skills in record-keeping, marketing, financial management, and more. The event was graced by Kgosi Dinake, who commended the initiative, saying, “This training is a beacon of hope for our community as it empowers our entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses and contribute to our local economy.”

The visit included a comprehensive tour of the mine, offering the MPs a firsthand understanding of our operations. They were provided with detailed updates on the diamond market, insights into current and future projects, and an overview of our contributions to national development. This initiative was aimed at enhancing their understanding of our work and its impact on the nation's growth. The delegation, led by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Honorable Dithapelo Keorapetse, was graciously received by Debswana's Managing Director, Andrew Motsomi, and members of his Executive Committee. This engagement enabled direct interaction between the MPs and Debswana's leadership, promoting a meaningful exchange of ideas and perspectives, and fostering a deeper understanding of Debswana’s strategic operations.
