AGRIVOLTAICS MEANINGFULLY COMBINING SOLAR AND AGRICULTURE Growing Benefits of Solar PV and Agriculture Together
About us
Enhancing Food, Energy and Financial Security To keep Canada’s farmers farming, agrivoltaics (the symbiotic combinations of agricultural and solar photovoltaics) provides an opportunity to add a reliable revenue stream while even increasing crop yields. Agrivoltaics has enormous promise in Canada. Agrivoltaics is in its infancy in Canada, but as is the case globally, there is a projected rapid expansion over the coming 5 years and we intend to support that growth as a common ground for best practices, crop and generation measurements, new technologies, approaches and environmental and electrical policy development.

Fantastic research efforts published today! Detailed economic analysis from Joshua Pearce and Western University. Our favorite highlight: “The results clarify the resilience of agrivoltaics to economic fluctuations, while highlighting sheep agrivoltaics as a stable and profitable investment.” https://lnkd.in/g4qSu6mX We see significant alignment between this published work and the enterprise analysis we’ve been working on to build frameworks for underserved farmers and solar to work jointly on economically and ecologically sound agrivoltaic business models. Looking forward to rollling out more direct support and technical assistance helping our farmer clients and partners benefit from research like this in 2025. Join us at uaheartland . org!

New research from the University of Sheffield highlights how agrivoltaics can transform agriculture in water-scarce and climate-vulnerable regions. 🌡️ By shading crops like maize, Swiss chard, and beans, solar panels create cooler microclimates, reducing water loss through evaporation and improving resilience during heat waves. Rainwater harvested from panels can further support irrigation, making every drop count. 🌽☀️ This innovative approach not only saves water but also boosts crop yields while generating clean, reliable energy. It's a sustainable solution for tackling food insecurity, water scarcity, and climate change. 🌎⚡💚 Want to learn more about agrivoltaics? Join us at our upcoming conference on Dec 3rd! Proud to highlight a project championed by last year’s keynote speaker, Jason Bradley and the SunCycle Farms team. Jason was providing updates on their efforts to preserve and improve soils while highlighting the massive opportunity that Cattle integrated #agrivoltaics presents for the whole industry. It can, and is being done. More of this will help more get done. Excited to get updates on this project at next year’s conference! #solargrazing Canadian Federation of Agriculture Ontario Federation of Agriculture Canadian Cattle Association Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada/ Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada Beef Farmers of Ontario American Solar Grazing Association (ASGA)
We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking demonstration that marks a significant step forward in regenerative agriculture and renewable energy! For the first time, mature cattle grazed on grasses inside a southern Alberta grid-connected solar PV power plant, showcasing the incredible synergy between livestock grazing and clean energy production. This innovative approach maximizes land use and enhances the health of our ecosystems. The success of this demonstration paves the way for a future where agriculture and renewable energy coexist harmoniously while creating common ground in the messy middle. Following this success, we have big plans for our agrivoltaics commercial demonstration in Cardston, Alberta! Together, we can cultivate solutions that benefit our planet and our communities. Join us in welcoming Peter Byck at our Agrivoltaics Canada Conference on December 3rd! Peter Byck is currently helping to lead a $10 million research project comparing Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing with conventional grazing; collaborating with 20 scientists and 10 farm families, focused on soil health & soil carbon storage, microbial/bug/bird biodiversity, water cycling and much more. The research also includes a new, 4-part docuseries called “Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there),” directed by Byck, which is all about the inventive farmers and maverick scientists building a path to solving climate change with hooves, heart and soil. See the CNN segment on the docu-series below! https://lnkd.in/gW9RV_aa Byck is a professor of practice at Arizona State University, in both the School of Sustainability and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, where he teaches students to make short documentary films about sustainability solutions. He is the director, producer and writer of carbon nation, a documentary film about climate change solutions. In 2020, Byck completed carbon cowboys, a 10-part documentary short film series, focused on regenerative grazing. Want to learn more about agrivoltaics from industry experts?
