No, it's not science fiction! The Canadian Agri-Food Automation & Intelligence Network has supported BHF Robotics' project: an autonomous agricultural robot that zaps weeds with electrical energy, only consuming 1/60th the power required of a herbicide treatment and avoids the need to spray toxic chemicals. Learn more below:
Canadian Agri-Food Automation & Intelligence Network is pleased to share the second in a series of 11 stories illustrating the success of our two 2023 funding calls. Our focus is finding and supporting innovators seeking solutions to the biggest challenges facing agri-food producers in Canada and around the world. Globally, there are numerous instances of herbicide resistance in weeds. Compounding the increasing ineffectiveness of many chemical applications is the fact that those that remain effective may have a negative environmental impact. The benefits of using the BH Frontier Solutions Inc. (BHF Agrobot) robotic weed zapper are threefold. First, the platform is effective. Plants cannot develop a resistance to electricity. Second, the robotic element is a welcome delivery mechanism at a time of severe agricultural labour shortages. Third there’s none of the soil contamination associated with some chemical spraying. Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada | Innovation, Sciences et Développement économique Canada’s support is allowing us to fund a solution that delivers the trifecta of benefits: economic, social, and environmental. FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENT: Today at #COP29, ERA launched its new $40 million Advanced Materials Challenge, supported by the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund. The Advanced Materials Challenge is a funding competition focused on technology solutions that can shape the circular economy and create low emissions products. This new challenge will increase the competitiveness of Alberta’s manufacturing and resource sectors, grow new provincial industries with export potential, and reduce the carbon footprint of material supply chains. Applications are open to scale-up, pilot, demonstration, and first-of-kind commercial projects of technologies and solutions related to the extraction, production, manufacturing, performance improvement, and circular lifecycle of new and existing material products in Alberta. Successful applicants are eligible for up to $5 million with a minimum request of $250,000. We’ll work closely with Alberta Innovates to ensure a broad scope of both early- and late-stage technologies are supported. 🍎 Toronto-based agtech startup Vivid Machines has developed tech that can “read” fruit trees and predict the size and amount of fruit a farm will yield in a year. Read more in the interview linked below 👇
Canadian Agri-Food Automation & Intelligence Network is pleased to share the fourth in a series of 11 stories illustrating the success of our two 2023 funding calls. Most of our applicants work with massive fields of canola, wheat, and other grains, livestock operations like beef or dairy farms, or horticulture facilities. To date, we’ve seen few applicants from the #fruit sector, despite the scope and scale of the industry, particularly in BC and Ontario. We were pleased to receive Vivid Machines’ request to provide about $800,000 to support the development of their orchard-yield-improvement technology. This project is providing a platform that will revolutionise orchards by allowing farmers more time to better manage the loads of individual trees, ensuring better outcomes in terms of consistency, colour, size, and yield. #agtech #innovation #agrifood Darrell Petras Garson Law Ryan Furtas Patience (Coleman) Palmer Laura Kilcrease Stuart Cullum Micheline Ayoub David Bailey Bethany Deshpande Cornelia Kreplin Chris Paterson Deb Stark Robert Saik Fred Wall Rickey Yada Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada | Innovation, Sciences et Développement économique Canada François-Philippe Champagne Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada/ Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada Joe Dales RHA Ventures Inc. Chronic pain affects millions of Canadians, with current treatments often falling short or causing serious side effects. We’re excited to support Zymedyne Therapeutics and its breakthrough work in chronic pain treatment through our AICE-Validate program. Dr. Gerald Zamponi’s team has discovered that pain regulators found in cell channels can be inhibited, and affect their interaction with potent analgesic effects. The team has identified a novel class of drugs that targets this interaction to provide pain relief, paving the way for safer, non-addictive therapies that could transform how we manage pain.
