Created to support the development of an economically-viable clean hydrogen value chain, the Alliance will work to enable the transition to a prosperous low-carbon economy in Atlantic Canada. Low-carbon hydrogen will be an essential part of the region’s energy mix to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Hydrogen will complement advances in electrification and support difficult to decarbonize sectors like industrial processes, heavy transportation, the marine sector and some power generation.

EverWind Fuels has completed their full lifecycle analysis of GHG emissions from their proposed green hydrogen project. The analysis was conducted by ERM – the world's largest global pure play sustainability consultancy. The results “found that even including shipping, emissions reductions compared to fossil-fuel models were more than 95%." The full case study is available here: https://lnkd.in/e6GQiDkm
In partnership with Energy NL and Net Zero Atlantic, the Atlantic Hydrogen Alliance will be conducting a hydrogen supply chain study with funding from ACOA - APECA and all 4 Atlantic Canadian provincial governments. The study will help us understand the readiness of Atlantic Canada's hydrogen supply chain, identify the gaps that will need to be addressed to support hydrogen development, and enhance Atlantic Canada’s hydrogen supply chain to maximize benefits from both domestic and international hydrogen development. Attached is a link to the RFP to select a consultant to complete the Hydrogen Supply Chain Gap Assessment and Development Plan for Atlantic Canada. Proposals are due on January 31, 2025. https://lnkd.in/dChSmUre

The Atlantic Hydrogen Alliance is collaborating with Canada's Ocean Supercluster (OSC) and Net Zero Atlantic to present the Marine Hydrogen Action Initiative to support the development of innovative hydrogen projects in Atlantic Canada. Recognizing our region’s vast hydrogen potential, this initiative will co-invest in projects that contribute to the growth of the ocean economy through hydrogen innovation. Eligible projects must include investments by 2 or more Canadian companies and demonstrate hydrogen innovation and economic growth potential. This webinar on December 19 at 1:00 AST will be of interest to investors interested in supporting hydrogen projects in the marine sector, companies with supply chain capabilities or services relevant to hydrogen innovation, organizations exploring pilot or scaling opportunities for hydrogen technologies in the ocean sector, and Leaders and decision-makers focused on advancing hydrogen solutions. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of the funding opportunity, project requirements, and strategies for collaboration to advance hydrogen’s role in Canada’s ocean economy. Join us to learn how the Marine Hydrogen Action Initiative can support your project and explore the steps to access this funding opportunity. Next Hydrogen Solutions Inc. (“Next Hydrogen“) (TSXV:NXH, OTC:NXHSF), a designer and manufacturer of electrolyzers, is pleased to announce that it has received a Letter of Interest (“LOI”) from Export Development Canada | Exportation et développement Canada (“EDC”), for potentially up to $5M in working capital debt financing. “We are grateful to EDC for its interest in supporting our growth opportunities,” said Raveel Afzaal, CFA, President & CEO of Next Hydrogen. “With 75% of the world GDP having policies in place to grow the #hydrogen economy, we see significant export potential for our innovative #electrolyzers to enable #decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors of the economy.” https://lnkd.in/gS-caabf
Dalhousie University was centre stage at the recent Halifax Chamber of Commerce Fall Dinner talking about their groundbreaking work to deliver clean energy locally, nationally, and globally. Matt Borys from EverWind Fuels talked about Nova Scotia’s opportunity to become a global player in green hydrogen and to supply Europe (“the spark plug of the industry”) with the clean energy it will need to achieve its emissions reduction goals and for energy security. Dalhousie has a number of connections to the emerging green hydrogen sector, from a collaboration between Dr. Michael Pegg's Hydrogen Applications Research Lab and the Eastward Energy to a two-year Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) project, co-led by Drs. Mita Dasog and Michael Freund to study affordable catalysts for green hydrogen production.
A late post, but I had a wonderful time the other week being an MC with Eniko Zsoldos at the Halifax Chamber of Commerce Dinner. I always enjoy talking about sustainable energy and what our future could look like here in Nova Scotia. Huge thanks to the organizers and Dr. Alice Aiken, jeff dahn, Chris Burns and Matt Borys for their excellent talks! Also thanks to Blaine Fiss, PhD for being my partner in clean energy for the evening!
Theodore Street, MASc and the rest of the research team at the Dalhousie University Hydrogen Applications Research Lab is doing important research on the use of hydrogen-enriched natural gas in gas appliances. It’s encouraging to see that the lab has successfully baked cookies in a natural gas oven using a blend of 60% hydrogen and 40% natural gas.
Yesterday for Dalhousie’s process engineering department holiday potluck we baked some cookies in an oven running on a 60% hydrogen, 40% natural gas fuel. Rest assured I sampled them beforehand (strictly for quality control purposes of course) and they were delicious! It was brilliant to see (and taste) the results of the work we do in the hydrogen applications research lab. Increasing both supply of and demand for hydrogen will help drive down costs and help in our efforts to decarbonise the energy sector. I think perhaps we need a larger sample size though, some brownies for our next team meeting maybe?
