NEW ANALYSIS: President-elect Trump has proposed a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada which could pose a serious threat to trade flows in North America. We used our gTech model to understand the potential economic impacts of these tariffs, which are big. Our modeling shows tariffs reduce US GDP by $140 billion annually and by $850 billion between 2025 and 2030. The following US sectors are hit hardest by the tariffs: 1) vehicle manufacturing, 2) construction and 3) small manufacturing like furniture. These sectors see their incomes decline by $152 billion combined between 2025 and 2030. American households are also hard hit by president-elect Trump’s tariffs. Our modeling finds household consumption in the US declines by $523 billion between 2025 and 2030 - this is equivalent to all household consumption in Michigan!
