Hydrogen Ontario, an affiliate of the Canadian Hydrogen Association, successfully concluded its inaugural provincial Advocacy and Awareness Week. Throughout the week, the association engaged policymakers from all political parties, marking a significant step forward in raising awareness of hydrogen’s critical role in driving Ontario’s net-zero economy.
One of the key highlights of the week was a roundtable with the Honourable Sam Oosterhoff, Minister of Energy Intensive Industries and member companies across the hydrogen value chain including Enbridge, Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Greenfield Global, Atura Power, Aurora Hydrogen, Cipher Neutron, Canadian Power-to-X Partners, ITD Industries Inc., and Change Energy. Topics covered included job creation, hydrogen adoption potential, and policy recommendations that could drive Ontario’s hydrogen sector forward.
Additionally, Hydrogen Ontario hosted several high-impact meetings with MPPs including Stephanie Bowman, Mary-Margaret McMahon, Ted Hsu, Dr. Chris Glover, Mike Schreiner, Peter Tabuns, as well as representatives from the offices of the Honourable Graydon Smith (Minister of Natural Resources), the Honourable Prabmeet Sarkaria (Minister of Transportation), and the Honourable Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario.
Our advocacy efforts covered:
✅ Policies to reduce hydrogen costs and expand infrastructure, ensuring Ontario remains competitive in the global hydrogen landscape
✅ Recommendations for a dedicated electricity rate for electrolytic hydrogen production
✅ Funding initiatives to support the development of hydrogen hubs, refueling infrastructure, public transit pilots, and industrial decarbonization projects across the province
✅ Low-carbon vehicle incentives to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered transport in Ontario.
✅ Advancing carbon capture and storage (CCS) legislation to enable hydrogen production
✅ Bridging the funding gap between seed and Series B for hydrogen start-ups, essential for scaling and commercialization
✅ Addressing the challenges Ontario’s hydrogen sector faces in competing with regions benefiting from more favorable policies as well as the HITCs CI requirements
Thank you to our member companies for participating including: StormFisher Hydrogen, HydroCool, Enbridge, Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Greenfield Global, Atura Power, Aurora Hydrogen, Cipher Neutron, Canadian Power-to-X Partners, ITD Industries, and Change Energy.
A special thank you to Fasken for their generous support and to reception sponsor Change Energy for making our first H2ON networking event a success!
