Why does one fire hall cost nearly 3x more than another? The comparison between Edmonton Fire Station No. 31 (Windermere) and Leduc County Fire Station No. 9 reveals an important trend: municipal planning choices significantly impact costs. Edmonton's station cost a staggering $15.582M compared to Leduc’s $5.685M, with the difference largely attributed to "gold-plating" facilities. Instead of focusing on cost-effective, functional builds, Edmonton’s approach highlights a trend of prioritizing premium designs and added features. Meanwhile, Leduc delivered a high-quality, functional fire hall at a fraction of the cost by sticking to essentials and avoiding unnecessary complexity. Key takeaway: Municipalities must rethink how they allocate resources. Prioritizing functionality and value ensures taxpayers get the infrastructure they need—without the inflated price tags. What’s your take? Are premium facilities worth the cost, or should we push for smarter, more cost-effective planning? Let’s discuss! Chart below for reference. Let’s keep raising the bar! BILD Alberta CEO Scott Fash was pleased to hear Minister Jason Nixon highlight the incredible progress on market and non-market housing today. There’s more to do, but his commitment over this past year has proven we can get there. #ABHousing Great insights were shared by BILD Alberta Board Member, Adil Kodian, on how partnerships between industry and non-profits can drive mixed-income housing solutions. #NationalHousingDay
