Why does one fire hall cost nearly 3x more than another? The comparison between Edmonton Fire Station No. 31 (Windermere) and Leduc County Fire Station No. 9 reveals an important trend: municipal planning choices significantly impact costs. Edmonton's station cost a staggering $15.582M compared to Leduc’s $5.685M, with the difference largely attributed to "gold-plating" facilities. Instead of focusing on cost-effective, functional builds, Edmonton’s approach highlights a trend of prioritizing premium designs and added features. Meanwhile, Leduc delivered a high-quality, functional fire hall at a fraction of the cost by sticking to essentials and avoiding unnecessary complexity. Key takeaway: Municipalities must rethink how they allocate resources. Prioritizing functionality and value ensures taxpayers get the infrastructure they need—without the inflated price tags. Now, we’re thrilled to welcome Sydney Bond as she takes on this leadership role. Sydney’s extensive experience and unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community-building make her the perfect fit to lead us forward. She has been an active force in shaping Alberta’s residential construction landscape and will continue this vital work, steering our association with passion and vision. Highlights from night one of BILD Alberta Association’s annual conference. A great conversation featuring the Honorable Jason Nixon, ECA, MLA and Minister Ric McIver about how to rebuild Jasper, housing supply, and the importance of streamlining regulations and policies that serve as barriers to development. And a few of our members were honoured some prestigious awards. Our Funding & Finance Committee Chair, Patrick Shaver, was awarded the Industry Leader Award while Melcor Developments’s CEO, Tim Melton, was inducted to the industry Hall of Fame. “We are not enemies, we are friends. We are not competitors, we are colleagues,” said Shaver.
