Canada's industry association for decentralised energy (DE) - onsite power production, consumption and distribution.

About us

Decentralised Energy Canada (DEC) is a registered, national, non-profit industry association that supports energy innovation and technology commercialisation in the decentralised energy sector. Decentralised energy (DE) is defined as heating, cooling or electrical energy that is produced, managed and/or stored at the point of consumption. As we strive to increase the efficient use of resources, DE technologies are ever more attractive to residential, commercial and industrial energy end-users. We were established as the New Energy Resources Alliance (NewERA) founded in 2002 by the Alberta Research Council through an industry-led initiative to accelerate the growth of decentralised energy markets. We are the most well-connected energy association in Canada.

  • 2024 HIGHLIGHTS - Caribbean Trade Mission Our Canada-Caribbean Microgrids Summit in Nassau in March 2024 was a unique collaboration between DEC, the Rocky Mountain Institute, Global Affairs Canada and the Government of The Bahamas. Canadian microgrid experts met with the Honorable Philip Davis, Prime Minister of the Bahamas, and several Caribbean microgrid stakeholders, such as community planners, hotel and tourism businesses, universities, and government to provide valuable capacity building support for microgrid projects in the Caribbean. Thank you to the Government of Canada and CanExport for your support of this trade mission. Read our 2023 Caribbean Microgrids Market Report https://loom.ly/qafALlo

  • 2024 HIGHLIGHTS - This week, Decentralised Energy Canada is looking back at some of the highlights of 2024. Congratulations to Splice N Connect Inc., this year’s Gamechanger Pitch Competition Winner. They have received a minimum of $25K of seed investment from Valhalla Private Capital for their technology, a non-invasive smart cable device that provides real-time monitoring of underground power cables to empower industries with actionable data to help optimize the grid. T.rex AI won the People’s Choice award for their ALEX Node, an AI-enabled decentralised control system to help optimise energy loads and balance supply and demand. Phase one of their first pilot is complete. Fuse Power Management won this year’s Rising Star award for their vehicle-to-grid (V2G) innovation, which utilizes Medium Heavy Duty electric vehicles to sell demand response services to the grid when the vehicles aren’t in use. This provides mobile electricity sources contributing to grid stability during peak demand times.

  • 2024 HIGHLIGHTS - This week, Decentralised Energy Canada is highlighting some of our top moments of 2024. This year, we started an extensive value chain mapping exercise that unpacks the transition to decentralised energy. Using our 21 years of industry experience and targeted research, we created an animation that explores the differences between traditional electricity infrastructure and decentralised energy infrastructure, with a focus on the role of prosumers (consumers who both produce and consume electricity) in the global shift to decentralised energy. It describes how onsite energy will provide a more efficient, resilient, and affordable future.  "A decentralised solution demands collaboration and cooperation between government and policymakers, innovation and technology experts, and prosumers," said Giulia Brito Pound, a McGill University student and DEC intern, who is leading this value chain mapping exercise. • 2024 HIGHLIGHTS - This week, Decentralised Energy Canada is recapping some of the highlights of 2024. The Decentralised Energy Forum in Whistler, B.C., was a game-changing success for our industry! Four salient themes emerged from the sessions and discussions: 1. Putting customers at the centre of the transition will be essential for driving the adoption of decentralised energy solutions. Social engagement is as important as providing technical solutions to propel the industry forward. 2. We need persistent innovators that are empowered by an ecosystem that is supportive, connected, and respectful. 3. Engaging with Indigenous communities, recognizing their valuable contributions, and promoting collaboration between Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous groups in energy development projects will accelerate energy accessibility for rural and indigenous communities. 4. The growing need for larger volumes of data and complex sources of data is challenging our classical computing capabilities. All industries, including decentralised energy, share this barrier to progress. Quantum computing is a promising solution that needs to be explored. DEF also served as a matchmaker between innovators and investors, and we’re excited to see the deals that emerge. Watch the full sessions on our YouTube Channel https://lnkd.in/gBkhBdrj We hope you’ll join us at DEF 2025, which will be held November 20-21, 2025 in Quebec City. Conference registrations are available now at a discounted price: https://loom.ly/zx5qwZs

  • Quantum computing is no longer a futuristic concept. Unlike classic computing, which processes bits as definitive zeros or ones, quantum computers use qubits. Imagine being able to be in two places at once – that's a day in the life of a qubit, capable of existing in a state of superposition – as both one and zero simultaneously. This means quantum computers can sift through vast amounts of data and solve complex calculations swiftly, making our current computing look like child’s play in comparison. As Parham Pashaei from the Quantum Algorithms Institute highlighted at our 2024 Decentralised Energy Forum, this leap allows us to craft new algorithms and computing methods that open a world of possibilities for decentralised energy systems. From advanced simulations and optimisation techniques to robust AI applications and groundbreaking cryptography – quantum computing is paving the way to a smarter, more resilient energy infrastructure. Watch the video here: https://loom.ly/XRneUSk As our energy needs become more dynamic, the volume of data and the predictive analytics we rely on become increasingly demanding. Quantum computing is our promising ally in meeting these challenges head-on. Join us at our 2025 Decentralised Energy Forum in Quebec City as we dive deep into the wonders of Quantum and the Energy Advantage. Secure your spot today while our holiday sale is on (ending December 31, 2024).
