Thank you Genome British Columbia for organizing yet another excellent Don Rix Distinguished Keynote 2024 last night. Thanks to Dr. Samuel Aparicio for taking us through the journey from the early days of history of decoding genetics by giants in the field, to personalised oncogenomics, a testament of the wonderful work of his team and other scientists at BC Cancer Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre. Appreciating how far we have come in decoding cancer from its first presentations in the "bill of death" in 1600s to being the scale as it is today. The more we understand the disease, the longer the road of unknowns seems to be. In particular, the catch up in the evolutionary "arms race" between tumour cells and therapeutics or implementing technology in patient care. I particularly enjoyed Sam's pic of Sydney Brenner on a visit to UBC. Rarely a scientist more foundational and pioneering than the wisdom of this great grandfather (in my academic lineage). #DRDK2024 #genomics #cancer
