ICCAIA is proud to be chairing the Global Aviation and Aerospace Skills Taskforce, such a dedicated and enthusiastic group, working towards ensuring a resilient future workforce for aerospace and aviation.
Aviation Safety and Skills Leader | Vice Chair GAAST | Championing collaboration between industry and government
❓ How do we ensure the aviation and aerospace industries have the workforce they need to thrive in the future? This isn’t a challenge that anyone can tackle alone. It’s a truly global issue that requires collaboration 🌍 between governments, regulators, industry, and academia. Every phase of flight ✈️, every organization, and every region depends on a diverse and future-ready workforce to meet growing demand and deliver safe, secure and sustainable sectors. I’m honoured to serve as Vice Chair of the Global Aviation and Aerospace Skills Taskforce (GAAST) — a unique and collaborative initiative bringing together industry, regulators and governments from across the world 🌏 to address shared workforce challenges. Under the incredible leadership of Nina Brooks, with Casey Ferriter as our tireless Program Manager, GAAST. This week, the taskforce convened for its second meeting, kindly hosted by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). It was a privilege to work alongside a group of inspiring individuals (where for once the women outnumbered the men) in these critical conversations. The spirit of international cooperation was on full display, and it’s only through this level of collaboration that we can craft solutions to ensure the aviation workforce of tomorrow is equipped to meet the challenges ahead. Special thanks to Jorge Vargas and Latifa Hadbi of the International Civil Aviation Organization for their invaluable insights, and to Mohammad Salem for hosting such a productive, energizing week and sharing your culture and country with us 🙏. To my fellow taskforce members: your dedication, creativity, and vision inspire me every day. Together, we’re making meaningful progress toward a sustainable and inclusive future for aviation 🌟. #aviation #aerospace #skills #GAAST #workforce #internationalcooperation #collaboration

Continuing the series of visits to ICCAIA’s Members and Associate Members in Asia, Dan Carnelly was hosted by #SJAC in Japan on the latest leg of his tour. First stop was a visit to Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) to discuss important issues for the global manufacturing industry with a focus on the International Civil Aviation Organization CAEP dual CO2 and noise stringency work, which will be discussed in detail in Montreal in February. Later in the day, Dan was accompanied by his SJAC hosts for an industrial visit in Utsunomiya with the aerospace division of #Subaru, meeting with CEO Yoshihiro Saito. The hosts explained the history of the company, starting as Nakajima before becoming Fuji Heavy Industries and finally Subaru Aerospace. Today, Subaru has deep ties to the helicopter industry and produces several large-scale composite and metallic structures for Boeing, as well as being a centre of excellence in Japan for wing design. Thanks for this extremely interesting and productive visit go to Minoru Hanakata of SJAC and both Saito-san and Mr. Daisuke Fukunaga at Subaru.

Second stop on the tour of ICCAIA’s Asian Members for Dan Carnelly is the 2nd International Conference on Green Aviation, #ICGA, in Chengdu, China, hosted by Associate Member #CSAA. Dan moderated a panel discussing industry’s contribution and challenges in delivering the International Civil Aviation Organization LTAG commitment of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. The panel discussed the part to be played by Sustainable Aviation Fuels and the progress being made in China. Panelists from Airbus, Boeing, SAFRAN and COMAC went on to discuss new energy solutions for propulsion technologies, including electric, hybrid and hydrogen. Non-CO2, and specifically contrails, is a developing subject that the group also touched on, before rounding up by discussing the lifecycle approach to aircraft design and production. It was also a great opportunity to refresh relationships with colleagues such as Dr. Fang Liu, ex-Secretary General of ICAO. Thanks go to Zhang Xue and the CSAA for inviting ICCAIA to moderate the panel and to the manufacturers themselves - Airbus Boeing, COMAC and Safran - for their valuable insights.
