Led by the inspiring Elizabeth Selhore, Sahara takes a holistic, community-driven approach to improving nutrition and health, especially for women and children in Pune, India. Sahara is dedicated to uplifting lives, including those of children, women, and individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. With nearly all staff members being former substance users or individuals living with HIV/AIDS, Sahara truly embodies the principle of "putting people first." We’re thrilled that 300 more families will now benefit from the Lucky Shakti Leaf, a natural cooking tool that fortifies liquid-based meals with essential iron. Thank you to Elizabeth and the entire Sahara team for all the work they do to address malnutrition and hidden hunger. Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending and presenting at the Black Physicians' Association of Ontario (BPAO) conference in Toronto, where I was able to share the work Lucky Iron Life is doing to address hidden hunger and specifically iron deficiency. Attending this conference was inspiring. One highlight was hearing from Dr. Beverley Essue, a global health systems researcher and health economist, who spoke about the persistent gender health gap across diverse geographies. Her insights were a powerful reminder: 🌍 Women worldwide face 75 million Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) annually due to gender health inequities—equivalent to 7 days of additional health burden per woman per year. 💡 Closing the women’s health gap represents a $1 trillion opportunity to improve lives and strengthen economies. 🔍 Black, Indigenous, and women of colour face compounded discrimination and inequity within healthcare systems, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change. I was deeply inspired by the incredible physicians and health practitioners at the conference who are driving change and shedding light on the systemic barriers and opportunities for equity within our health systems. It was truly an honour to present Lucky Iron Life's work. It was an absolute honour for Lucky Iron Life be invited by the Minister of Foreign Affairs to last night's event. Mélanie Joly and Justin Trudeau shared exciting upcoming updates about the growing collaboration between Canada and the African Union Commission. As a Canadian company with several impact programs across Africa, it is inspiring to witness the growing institutional support at the highest levels. It was truly a pinch-me moment to be in a room I could only have imagined existing 10 years ago when I was just starting out in this space—let alone being invited to join. We hosted a workshop "Beyond the Conventional: Building Inclusive Pathways to Gender Equality in Global Health." Together, we explored the intersections of gender, race, ability, and age in global health, pushing beyond traditional frameworks to foster truly inclusive and equitable health solutions.
