Thank you to BC Non-Profit Housing Association for creating space to discuss the critical role of refugee voices in housing policy at the 2024 #HousingCentral Conference. Nikita Laranjeira, from our BC CHARMS team, moderated the 'Lived Experience' panel, which highlighted the challenges refugee claimants face when accessing safe and affordable housing in BC. The discussion inspired actionable ideas for housing providers and policymakers to address barriers like discrimination and family separation. The stories shared underscored the urgent need for equitable housing policies and practices that address these realities directly. (Photos have been blurred to respect panelists’ privacy.)

Nearly 80 clients, partners, and supporters gathered to honour this community and share an evening of poetry, music, and connection. This event spotlighted the evolving dynamics of our society and the crucial work needed to meet the diverse needs of various intersecting groups. Our team members, David Lee and Adrienne Bale (she/her), engaged in an insightful workshop and panel discussion on 'Citizenship and belonging: A research and service provider perspective,' while Monica Yagi contributed her expertise in a panel on 'Community Perspectives on Reducing Barriers to Crisis Lines & Other Mental Health Supports.' We are committed to fostering dialogue and action on these pivotal issues for a more inclusive and supportive Canada.
