Over 7 years ago, thousands of companies committed to inspiring plastic reduction goals. Commitments ranged from compostable solutions to simply taking a more responsible approach to their use of plastics by 2025. Fast forward to 2025, once-ambitious goals have now been pushed to 2030 and beyond - deepening our reliance on the plastics value chain. Believe it or not, we are still optimistic about the future of sustainable materials. How so? Read Jill Watson's latest feature, in which she recalls her long history with erthos® and shares key insights and data points to make sense of the current complex landscape of sustainable materials—and our predictions for the path forward. Want to know the latest on the 2025 plastic crisis? Dive into Jill Watson's latest article on what did and didn't change in the last 7 years, as well as what's next this year and beyond: https://lnkd.in/gcrfi4zi
I was introduced to erthos® in 2019 as an investor at Golden Ventures. After many conversations with the CEO and Co-founder, Nuha Siddiqui, I developed conviction in the team, the market potential, and the vision: replace plastic at scale. With deep belief in erthos®, and the real impact I knew it would have, I built a strong investment case, and we ultimately led the seed round that year. After a few years in venture capital, I started to develop an itch to operate and eventually transitioned to working directly with early-stage companies. I remained close to Nuha Siddiqui over the years and eventually joined erthos® as Head of Growth last year. We joke that it was inevitable that I’d join one day, it was just figuring out the right time. It’s been incredibly rewarding to experience the bioplastics industry from an entirely new perspective, to support brands and material producers working to reduce our global dependency on plastic. It’s been almost 6 years since I first met Nuha Siddiqui. While erthos' team and vision remain strong, the market progress I once hoped for hasn’t fully materialized. Many 2025 plastic reduction goals have been quietly pushed to 2030. Recycling remains the industry’s crutch. Even plastic straws are coming back. So, what held us back? And what’s actually working? In our latest article, I break down the biggest roadblocks—and the innovations that give me hope. https://lnkd.in/gpVasm_c #erthos #InvestorTurnedOperator #SustainableMaterials

Thank you to the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada for an incredible #CIAC2025 in Singapore last week! Honored to be invited to showcase erthos® at the Next-Gen Tech Forum and moderate a dynamic discussion with global investors helping shaping the future of climate tech (Mike Maté, Art Robinson, Michael Gryseels, Ellen Martin). With 2030 net-zero targets fast approaching and the world grappling with increasing climate and economic instability, these conversations are more critical than ever. As we work to mainstream clean technology, discussions on funding and scaling sustainable innovation highlighted both the urgency of action and the opportunities ahead. The path forward is undoubtedly challenging given the current landscape, but through greater Canada-Asia collaboration, strategic capital, and a long-term vision that adapts to evolving markets, we can continue to drive this movement forward. Grateful for the insights, connections, and the continued support for women founders from champions like Jeff, Christine, A.W., Elisa Chiu 🌿 🌎 🇨🇦
