I am delighted to share that I will be starting a new chapter as President & CEO of the Public Policy Forum. After nearly 25 years as a builder and leader in the brain health ecosystem, I am looking forward to broadening my impact (though many roads connect to the brain!), and working with a dynamic team, engaged Board and fantastic Chair Andre Beaulieu. And I have discovered a great collaborator in Edward Greenspon. Every journey is shaped by hard work, luck, and who you meet along the way: I will always have a debt of gratitude to the late Hon. Michael H. Wilson, Allan R. Taylor and Rupert Duchesne C.M. for their belief in my vision. I learned so much from them, including that policy matters if you want to achieve lasting and meaningful impact. The past five years have been an amazing period of growth and discovery, thanks to Ken Irving and Magali Haas. They helped me find joy and inspiration through building new ventures - but also taught me that life must have many dimensions. The loyalty and support of Lilly Demers, Matthieu Watson Santerre and Patricia MacDonald remind me every day that it takes a village to do anything worth doing, and you can only truly lead when you have a great team. Finally, so many people have stepped up for me to help me find and fulfill my calling. You know who you are. I won't out you on social media, but will reach out soon.
Thrilled to announce the appointment of Inez Jabalpurwala, a distinguished leader in public policy and non-profit management, as the incoming President and Chief Executive Officer of the Public Policy Forum, effective January 6, 2025. Current PPF President and CEO Edward Greenspon will remain as a PPF Fellow and will work as a Senior Advisor to the CEO through the transition. Ms. Jabalpurwala is currently Global Director of VINEx, an organization she built to explore how SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses impact the brain, and co-leader of the Brain Health Nexus, a multidisciplinary effort to unleash science and technology to optimize brain health. Prior to these roles, Ms. Jabalpurwala was Founding President and CEO of the Brain Canada Foundation, building a globally recognized health charity that accelerated Canada’s excellent research on the brain. “Experience working at the intersection of a range of disciplines and across sectors fueled my appreciation of the importance of policy interconnections,” Ms. Jabalpurwala says. “My work on brain health was an entry point to a deeper understanding of the environment, climate change, AI, data science, economic growth and increased productivity — many of the same issues of concern to PPF.” Please join us in congratulating her!

It was fantastic to join colleagues over two days of brain events at #UNGA79 in New York City. My work on VINEx and Brain Health Nexus, and early passion for the environment have led me to the mission of advancing our understanding of how our #brainhealth and the #environment intersect across the life course. I built my career making the case for the brain as one interconnected system; but we now know that the brain does not exist in isolation; it is part of the human system and impacted by our physical and natural environment. We also know that brain health impacts are different in different parts of the world, and we need to democratize and diversify data collection. There is no brain health until there is brain health for all. And without brain health, we limit our ability to thrive, and our societies and economies to prosper. Meeting Burcin Ikiz, PhD was a revelation: a brilliant leader who has been building a global movement - #NeuroClimateWorkingGroup - to map out the state of the science on how climate change and pollution are impacting brain health, and to link and amplify multi-disciplinary research that is happening at the local, regional, national and global levels. This will empower us with the data and stories to build an inclusive and unifying narrative and multi-scale policy recommendations. I am excited to be on the journey with Burcin, Angie Michaiel, PhD, and many collaborators who have joined the movement. It was inspiring and energizing to be part of a brainstorming with Matt McFarlane, Agustin Ibanez, and Khara Ramos, Ph.D. We need to ensure that plans and strategies are linked to action. I am grateful to Magali Haas for being such a solid "action" partner, and to Sandra Bond Chapman PhD, who was a pioneer in flipping the script from brain disease to brain health - she took risk when no one was talking about brain health and built a center and the framework that we are all using today. Stay tuned for Brain Health Nexus' paper on brain health across the life course through a #globalbrainhealthindex - the culmination of five years working with a global community, and a testament to what's possible when great minds and hearts come together with common purpose. Exciting Alignment with the Green Brain Capital Framework and UNGA Science Summit Brain Days Thrilled to share insights on the recent publication, 'Planetary Health Diet Index and risk of total and cause-specific mortality in three prospective cohorts’. This groundbreaking study not only advances our understanding of sustainable diets but also resonates deeply with the principles of the Green Brain Capital framework (noted in our recent Neuron paper https://lnkd.in/gEMjRX4v). The Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) underscores the symbiotic relationship between human health and our planet’s wellbeing. It aligns with the Green Brain Capital’s emphasis on brain health as a driver of the knowledge economy, highlighting the importance of green skills, creativity, adaptability, and ecological intelligence. As we approach the UNGA Science Summit Brain Days on September 18-20, it’s pertinent to reflect on how the brain economy transition can catalyze the One Health approach. The themes of this summit are more relevant than ever, as we strive to integrate health across humans, animals, plants, and our shared environment. The findings of the PHDI study serve as a testament to the potential of dietary choices in mitigating environmental impacts while promoting longevity and reducing disease risk. This is a prime example of how individual actions can contribute to broader societal and environmental goals, a concept at the heart of the upcoming Brain Days discussions4. Let’s continue to foster interdisciplinary collaborations that bridge nutrition, health, and environmental sciences. Together, we can pave the way for a sustainable future where the health of our planet and its inhabitants is intertwined. #PlanetaryHealth #SustainableDiet #BrainCapital #UNGA #ScienceSummit #OneHealth Paweł Świeboda Rym Ayadi Felice Jacka OAM Agustin Ibanez

When I was 10 years old, I proudly secured a membership card for the Soil Conservation Society of America (now the Soil and Water Conservation Society). I always wanted to be in the conservation space, but I got distracted by my #brain work! So on this #EarthDay, it feels like I am finally coming full circle into my passion, as a member of the #Neuro #Climate Working Group. This global community met for the first time today, convened by the amazing Burcin Ikiz, PhD. Our collective aspiration is to drive research, advocacy and policy around the bi-directional relationship between brain health and the environment. Thank you to Kimberly Doell, PhD for your insightful presentation about the impact of climate change on brain health, and to the meeting participants who raised important points about the neurological and mental health impacts of air pollution, leveraging local climate resilience building efforts centered around an understanding of neuroplasticity, and combining the #braincapital and #naturecapital concepts in a "brain positive" narrative. How is climate change affecting our brains? Today on CBC/Radio-Canada's The Current, I discussed climatological neuroepidemiology—a burgeoning field at the intersection of climate science, epidemiology, and neuroscience - and what the studies from this field show us. With the climate crisis intensifying health impacts and potentially accelerating the dementia epidemic, we emphasized the need for swift action, research expansion, and strategic policy development to combat these neurological threats. Fantastic overview of the convergence of advances in basic science, #data science, systems modelling, simulation, #AI analytics and #neurotechnology - and a global commitment to collaboration - which make a Global Brain Health Index possible. Measuring and monitoring #brainhealth will have benefits similar to the Heart Health Index, which was one of the most important developments in 20th century medicine, and changed the paradigm from disease to health. Let's join efforts across disciplines and borders and build a Global Brain Health Index that doesn't leave anyone behind, and usher in a golden era of global brain health. It is the Brain Awareness Week, led by Dana Foundation. Awareness is typically about being able to measure and then understand. Most of us have never experienced any attention being paid to our #brainhealth during standard medical visits. As we speak, a routine assessment for brain health is largely lacking, for a number of reasons, from heterogeneity of #brain disorders to inaccessibility of the brain itself. Gladly, this where one of the most impactful changes in the field is taking place, given powerful strides in #science and #technology. Analysing an entire range of brain-health related information is becoming possible. In a game-changing mode, #bloodtests are emerging for disorders such as #Alzheimer's, completely unthinkable until recently, although performance still needs to be confirmed in diverse groups of #patients. Next challenge is applying these new methodologies in #primarycare settings. GPs will have to be thoroughly informed to guide diagnosis and avoid misinterpretation. The future will see a system of #brainhealth tracking with validated and optimised tools, relying on the integration of all available data, from genomics and gene expression, to results of cognitive tests and data from wearable sensors, topped up by powerful AI analytics. Projects such as AD-RIDDLE aim at delivering complete toolbox platforms to cover all stages of the clinical pathway. Quantification of #brainhealth is much more impactful and efficient than relying on individual markers. Importantly, this will enable proactive risk reduction programmes with individualised services and targeted multi-domain interventions. Brain awareness is slowly gaining an altogether different meaning.
