We donate 100% of our election sign recycling fees each year to a different charitable group, with the aim to highlight important local causes we believe in. This year we are supporting the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society, who serves to provide programs that support all genders and age groups of Aboriginal Peoples, in housing & food security, employment, mental health, self reliance and more. Very excited to see the successful launch of the West Vancouver #flexibleplastics collection from multi-family buildings. This is the first of its kind in the Recycle BC program and we are thrilled to work with our collection partner, Waste Control Services, on this initiative in this service area. Nobody has the best solution for collecting and recycling flexible plastics, but projects like this help build our understanding of managing this material and allow us to continue to evolve our approach. We are on a mission to dramatically increase the amount of flexible plastics we collect and recycle, and this is a huge step forward. Last week was our driver Cliff's 65th birthday. Cliff was where he always has been on a Thursday, driving his truck #551 of municipal route 551. Cliff is one of our 'originals' and he has been the only driver on Route 551 since the West Vancouver Municipal Operation was launched on July 2nd back in 2018. A week and a half ago I had the pleasure of representing our team at Recycle BC 's multi-day 2024 Recycling Partner Conference, celebrating 10 years of achievements in partnership with producers, depot & curbside collectors, recovery facilities and end market partners. We got to tour four material recovery facilities including Recycle BC’s Centre of Material Intelligence, Merlin Plastics Supply Inc. Delta, GFL Environmental Inc. Richmond, and Urban Impact Recycling Ltd New Westminster to learn more about the post-collection material recovery process, challenges they face, and how their facilities recycle the materials we send them from the residential program. We got to hear from experts in the field and saw firsthand recycling myths absolutely busted. It was inspiring to see all the different groups working together to create a better B.C., how what our team does at Waste Control Services fits into that bigger picture, and how the rest of the world is modelling recycling programs after what we are doing here in BC. At the event’s Blue Star Awards dinner, our team was recognized by Recycle BC and received the following Blue Star Award for "trust": “This partner has proven to be dependable and trustworthy, excelling in promotion and education about recycling, conducting curbside audits, engaging the public through events and social media, and providing recycling education at local schools. Their willingness to collaborate and test flexible plastic curbside collection has been invaluable and paved the way for this stream to be collected directly from homes. We are thrilled to honor Waste Control Services with our Blue Star Award for trust.” 4 years ago, I didn’t know a space like this existed for me – A space where passion and purpose could align. It is after these events I’m reassured I'm exactly where I belong in this industry (even with the delirious post-event introvert exhaustion), and I look forward to another 4 years of learning, pushing outside my comfort zone, and broadening my perspective(s) of the recycling & waste landscape! Thank you Recycle BC & partners for exemplifying what is made possible when you keep on keeping on. Thank you for your level of care, for setting the record straight about recycling time and time again, and for creating the standard for the rest of us to stay motivated by in this industry. Cheers to 10 years of ‘doing the hard work’ and to another 10+ years ahead!
