#HAPPENINGONTHEHILL - Mushroom spread, baby salmon, and reducing fatigue in drilling were hot topics at Signal Hill Campus Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador at very special coffee break in the Johnson Insurance Atrium, Emera Innovation Exchange on January 22. Along with coffee, snacks and conversation, the focus was on the work of three excellent researchers with the launch of the SHC winter Grad Student Research Showcase. To the delight of attendees, each of the researchers had a great way of making complex research relatable to the province. Victoria Lynn Smit Heath gave a shout-out to the salmon and their ability to adapt from fresh water to salt water and back again, and shared her research on the effect of changing temperature on salmon parr in three Newfoundland rivers. Sampath Liyanarachchi got us thinking on how deviated drilling goes and considering the effects of friction, fatigue and vibration. Where digital meets fungi, Pranav Arora shared his computer modelling work on climate change and mushroom spread. Many of the Signal Hill Units came together for the event. Johnson Geo Centre staff did the image installation, the coffee and snacks were courtesy of the Harris Centre and Conference and Event Services, grad student residents brought questions and conversation, and the Office of Public Engagement brought good cheer and good ideas for future events. #MeetAtMemorial - When it comes to event management Memorial University's Conference and Event Services Coordinator Amy LeGresley is the face of grace and calm. Since November of 2023 Amy has worked with clients to coordinate upward of 100 events, from gloriously lavish weddings to large academic conferences to corporate meetings, and smaller sessions for a variety of clients. She loves the work. She says, "Every event has its own objectives, and the main job of the event coordinator is to help the client achieve it." A problem-solver by nature, Amy asks questions and listens to the answer to come up with great solutions, some obvious, some not-so-obvious! Her educational background honed those skills. With a BSc in Chemistry and Math from Memorial, Amy is a woman who seeks order and looks for ways to bring together elements that support each other toward the desired goal. Amy loves the challenges of putting the pieces of events in place, and she's got a soft spot for weddings. She says, "It's a privilege to work with people on what is one of the most important days of their lives, and it's a pleasure to bring a bit of calm to what can often feel a little chaotic for the happy couple." She discovered the event management world through her work with the military community. Working with Military Family Resource Centres throughout Canada, Amy found herself in various supporting roles for families, from information briefings to program development, event hosting and fundraising. Her education and work came together to create a unique and exceptional event management skill set. Along with being a stellar event coordinator at work, she and her husband have two very energetic and creative young children at home which keeps those event coordination skills sharp out of the office. She enjoys spending time taking them on adventures. #MeetAtMemorial - Great events move along like ducks: everything looks effortless because of the work under the surface. Paula Eddy-Shea is Events Liasion with Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador. A woman in demand, she's shared between Memorial University - Conference and Event Services and the President's Office, specializing in Institutional Events. Her Memorial career began in 2009 and since then she has run events for five of the University's Presidents, worked thousands of events of all types, including hundreds of convocations. (Typically there are three convocation sessions per day for three days in Spring Convocation, and one day in fall convocation). Paula's work in large-scale events predates her tenure at Memorial. She was on the team that celebrated the gravity-based structure tow-out to Hibernia, and went on to work with the Janeway Children's Foundation, raising millions for the child health facility. All that to say, if you're looking for information about event protocol, the most efficient ways to get things done, how to get around problems, or who to talk to about any particular event-related topic, Paula is your go-to. If she's in the office, from one hour to the next Paula could be advising on protocol for running an event for 200 dignitaries, then running to the Dollar Store for paper bags for popcorn, and then taking a quick office survey to identify favourite hot chocolate toppings for an upcoming event. Meanwhile she will have brought in treats, often home-made to the delight of the Signal Hill Campus Operations and Conference and Event Services crew. That's the thing about Paula - she's herself and at ease in all situations. Paula says her favourite thing about her job is that "no two days are the same. While there are annual events that are routine, the people are what makes the day and the event very unique. I like knowing that the event reflects the people who are there as guests or those that are being recognized. But make it personal over perfection." But not as many people know that it's a premiere space for truly unique personal and corporate events, bookable through Memorial University - Conference and Event Services team. The Johnson Geo Centre experience is impressive, from the blue-glass walls that make up much of the outside, to its bedrock core. The GeoPark grounds are some of the loveliest in St. John's east end, and they provide beautiful space for the ideal nature break. Inside, the two floors of Geo feature different spaces to suit a wide variety of events. If it's a corporate event you're hosting, Geo is an ideal space for small business meetings, board meetings, AGMs, or training sessions. There is even a 60+ media theatre for presentations. Businesses and organizations in the natural resources sector really enjoy being in sync with the surroundings at Geo. After the work is done, the Reception Hall is perfect for receptions and socials. On the side of love, many happy couples have tied the knot under the skies in the great outdoors on the Geo Centre Rock Deck where there are three ways to make an entrance: come across the bridge and down the steps, up through the trail, or through the glass doors of the Reception Hall. As part of the 2 Billion Trees Project, the Botanical Gardens received $295,000 in funding from the Government of Canada to establish a tree nursery on the site. #MeetAtMemorial - Most people at Signal Hill Campus know Jessica Humphries. Officially she's the Admin Staff Specialist for Conference and Event Services - a role she's brilliantly multi-tasked for six years this month. Unofficially she's known as the hub of the hub of Signal Hill Campus. She's the one who knows where all the things are, what they are supposed to do, and how to make them work. She loves the hustle and bustle and is the go-to for everything from the room bookings, to mail, to any sort of CES institutional knowledge. She was one of the first to work at the Emera Innovation Exchange when it opened. All that makes her great at her job. But it's her warmth and smile and infectious laugh that makes her such an amazing coworker. Sometimes members of the SHC community come to Jessica for deliveries, but stay for the camaraderie - and to see her seasonal decorating displays.  But don't be fooled by all the fun! The woman has two big red buttons on her desk. One says 'easy' and the other says 'NO' and she uses them equally with confidence! Jessica has been at Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador all the years of her professional career. Prior to Conference and Event Services, Jessica spend 10 years in the Division of Marketing and Communications, as well as a few short-term Departmental contracts.  When she's not working on Signal Hill Campus, Jessica enjoys walking her dog Milo, biking with her partner, and chilling out in front of the TV.
