📢 Landmine Monitor 2024 is out! The latest edition of the Landmine Monitor by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines - Cluster Munition Coalition (ICBL-CMC) highlights the alarming reality of landmine use, contamination and their devastating impact on communities around the world. In 2023, the report recorded the highest number of casualties from anti-personnel mines since 2011. Tragically, 84% of those affected were civilians, and over a third of them were children. Yet, there is hope. Last year, more than 281.50 km² of land was cleared across the world, and over 160'566 anti-personnel mines were destroyed. These achievements represent the collective determination to create a safer, mine-free world. FSD is proud to play its part in this vital effort and remains deeply committed to continuing its mission of clearing land and protecting lives. ➡️ Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eMRBVQ_R #LandmineMonitor2024 #MineBanTreaty #MineFreeWorld #MineAction #LandmineFree #SafetyForAll

Last week, Steve Munro, FSD's Operations Manager in Iraq, participated in the Lessons Learned Workshop on Innovation for Land Release in Erbil. The workshop brought together national demining authorities from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, alongside several humanitarian mine action NGOs, to exchange experiences and insights. A key takeaway from the event was learning how to design effective micro-projects with limited budgets to achieve impactful results. A sincere thank you to Handicap International - Humanity & Inclusion for organising and facilitating this engaging event! #HumanitarianDemining #Iraq #MineAction #LessonsLearned

This month, Steve Munro, International Operations Manager at FSD, was pleased to participate in the GICHD Workshop on Gaza in Jordan. Mine action specialists from different backgrounds and areas of expertise gathered to discuss operational strategies for Gaza. Key topics included explosive ordnance disposal, mechanical clearance, explosive detection dogs, explosive ordnance risk education, and information management. The event was an invaluable platform for sharing expertise and fostering innovative solutions to address the challenges posed by the widespread contamination of explosive ordnance in Gaza. The situation on the ground presents severe risks to civilians, making collaborative efforts like these essential for supporting affected communities. A heartfelt thank you to Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) for facilitating this impactful workshop. #HumanitarianDemining #Workshop #MineAction #Gaza

This Wednesday, November 27, I’ll have the honour of presenting at the Fifth Review Conference of the Mine Ban Treaty in Siem Reap. During a side event, organised by Conflict and Environment Observatory, on the topic 'Do No Harm? Addressing Environmental Issues in Humanitarian Mine Action,' I'll discuss FSD (Fondation suisse de déminage)'s work on contaminated soils in Ukraine, focusing on restoring livelihoods and food production through mine clearance. The presentation will also include a case study on soil assessments conducted by FAO, evaluating the impact of demining machines on soil structure. Taking environmental factors into account is essential to ensure that mine action not only saves lives, but also supports sustainable recovery. It's inspiring to see growing initiatives and cooperation within the sector to integrate environmental considerations into humanitarian mine action. 🌱✨ FAO, World Food Programme For more information: https://lnkd.in/eibCyqsV #HumanitarianMineAction #EnvironmentalImpact #MineBanTreaty #SiemReapSummit Side event: Do no harm? 🌍 March for a Mine-Free World 🌍 This morning, I had the honor of representing the FSD (Fondation suisse de déminage) at the March for a Mine-Free World to the Bayon Temple in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Walking alongside dedicated activists, landmine survivors, and fellow humanitarian workers was a powerful reminder of our collective commitment to a safer, mine-free world. The event, part of the fifth Review Conference of the APMBC, highlighted the ongoing efforts and challenges in the fight against landmines. It was heartening to see such a diverse group united by a common goal: to eliminate the threat of landmines and support affected communities. #MineFreeWorld #APMBC2024 #MarchForMineFreeWorld #LandmineFree #HumanitarianAid #EndLandmines
