The Junior Diplomat Initiative at Geneva Graduate Institute is excited to announce its event on The Intersection of Private and Institutional Peace Mediation!🌟Join us at the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) for an insightful discussion! 🤝 As nations face challenges from non-state actors like terrorists or rebel groups, negotiations remain essential for conflict prevention and resolution. In situations where states are restricted in communication due to the pariah status of certain actors or to geopolitical polarization, private diplomacy institutes like the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) can step in as impartial mediators focused solely on conflict resolution. Let’s discuss the intersection of private and institutional peace mediation! Our discussion will be led by Alexandre Liebeskind (Africa Regional Director, Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD)), and Emilian Berutti (Academic Coordinator, Geneva Policy Outlook). Registration is not mandatory, but please arrive before 5pm (official start time). #juniordiplomatinitiative #privatediplomacy #institutionaldiplomacy #genevagraduateinstitute

Very interesting lunch discussion with Hugo Slim earlier this week, about the substance of his new book “#Humanitarianism 2.0: New #Ethics for the #ClimateEmergency” Recognizing the impracticability of separating human beings from nature in the context of the accelerating global #climatecrisis, he propounds the need for an expansion of the focus on ‘humanity’ to encompass the protection of nature (a ‘landscape’ or ‘ecosystem’ approach). Arguably somewhat at odds with some of his previous work highlighting the need for humanitarian prioritization in view of increasing needs and declining resources, the core argument is inescapable and profound. And it resonates closely with the World Council of Churches’ concept of ‘The #LivingPlanet’. Thanks to Geneva Policy Outlook for convening us.

It was a pleasure hosting you at the Geneva Graduate Institute for this insightful consultation!
🌍What a week! In preparation for the 2025 Human Development Report, José Antonio Reyes González, Yanchun Zhang and I had the privilege to discuss AI & the Future of work with International Labour Organization, explore metrics for universal and meaningful connectivity with colleagues from International Telecommunication Union, dive into AI, business and human rights thanks to United Nations Human Rights, and join a roundtable on governance, AI, and human development at Geneva Policy Outlook. A huge thanks to everyone involved in making these discussions happen, the fantastic Human Development Report Office - United Nations Development Programme and UNDP Geneva team - with a special shoutout to Ajita Singh, PhD, MPA, Prachi Paliwal and James Chabin, Alexis Laffittan, and Roqaya Dhaif warranted. I left Geneva inspired and encouraged, convinced that we are on to something here: the 2025 HDR is not another technology report, but a report about people and the choices we need to make to steer the transformations brought about by advanced digital technologies towards enhancing human development, leaving no one behind. A special thanks to Isabel Ebert, PhD who took us on a brief tour of Palais des Nations. Such a treat, and a reminder of the broader context of our work. #Peace. #HDR2025 #HumanDevelopment #AI #Technology
