The DRC faces a severe and prolonged humanitarian crisis exacerbated by armed conflicts, underdevelopment, natural disasters, and recurrent epidemics. ➡️ 7 million children are estimated to be out of school ➡️ 7.7 million require protection from GBV ➡️ 1.6 million comprise the most vulnerable in need of Education in Emergency services and at risk of grave violations In response to these challenges, the DRC Education Cluster has been working to promote a coordinated, multisectoral approach across the Child Protection and Education in Emergencies sectors, that takes into consideration GBV risk mitigation. The GEC supported the Education Cluster in the DRC through technical support on reinforcing linkages between EiE-CP and GBV risk mitigation, and has also been providing strategic guidance to the Cluster in its development of a new Multi-Year Resilience Program, funded by Education Cannot Wait (ECW). Today we held our Partners Forum to mark the #16DaysOfActivism. Girls around the world are facing multidimensional crises: 🔴 54% of 78 million out-of-school children in humanitarian crises are girls 🔴 650 million girls are forcibly married before 18 🔴 1 in 3 women/girls is victim of sexual or physical violence in her lifetime With Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the Gender Based Violence Area of Responsibility, the Nigeria Education Cluster, the Democratic Republic of Congo Education Cluster and other partners, we discussed how to promote gender equality and mitigate risks of gender-based violence in Education in Emergencies responses, for safer #girlseducation. We also highlighted our Gender Learning Brief, released this year with support from Education Cannot Wait, which includes practical examples and case studies on GBV risk mitigation in #EiE responses from Afghanistan, DRC and Nigeria. Safe education for girls is our collective responsibility, and we commit with partners to strengthening #GBV risk mitigation in EiE responses.
