Regulation and Beyond: shaping a sustainable future 🌱 At the recent #COP29, experts came together to explore the relationship between #regulation and #sustainability. The side event "Regulation and Beyond – Opportunities & Challenges" provided valuable insights into how regulations like the #EUDR are shaping our planet’s future. 💡 Key highlights ◾ Françoise Van de Ven (ATIBT ) emphasised that while certified companies are ready for the EUDR, the lack of readiness among customs and information systems posed significant challenges. ◾ Jennifer Conje (ITTO | International Tropical Timber Organization) highlighted that regulations drive supply chain transformation, but they must balance environmental, economic, and social goals. ◾ Thorsten Arndt explained that PEFC translates EUDR requirements into actionable steps, and helps forest managers implement best practices that go beyond legal compliance. ◾ Moderator Sara Bray (Australian Forest Products Association) highlighted that policies often lack cohesion across international, federal, and local levels, creating gaps that need to be bridged. The panelists collectively emphasised the need for cohesive, inclusive, and well-coordinated policies that involve local stakeholders. International cooperation and certification systems are key for linking regulatory frameworks and practical implementation. 📽️ Read more and watch the recording 👉 https://lnkd.in/em8VGVwW #Forestry #ClimateAction

PEFC is the world's leading forest certification system and the certification system of choice for small-forest owners.
Info
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. By working throughout the entire forest supply chain, PEFC promotes good practice in the forest and ensures that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Thanks to the PEFC label, customers and consumers are able to identify products from sustainably managed forests. As an umbrella organization, PEFC endorses national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions. PEFC was founded by small- and family forest owners to demonstrate excellence in sustainable forest management. With 49 endorsed national certification systems and more than 330 million hectares of certified forests, PEFC is the world's largest forest certification system.

Eduardo Rojas Briales was re-elected as PEFC International Chair during last week’s General Assembly. In his first term as Chair, the PEFC Alliance developed the PEFC 2030 Strategy, and saw seven national standards achieve PEFC endorsement, including the first regional systems and Trees Outside Forests standards. 🌳 “Despite challenging circumstances in the last three years, PEFC’s presence has grown significantly across all continents, and we have gained new members. We have made progress at regional level and explored new approaches like the design of a new member-driven 2030 Strategy, and expanded efforts in development and fundraising,” Eduardo remarked. Looking forward to the coming tenure, he highlighted the need for continued progress and a long-term strategic focus. “A long-term strategic perspective is needed as the challenges and opportunities that forests and forestry face are extremely diverse and complex. Ensuring the global dimension of PEFC is crucial in this sense, as well as consistent support to our members.” Read more 👉 treee.es/ChairElection24 The General Assembly also welcomed Thomas Schenker to the PEFC International Board. Dradjad Wibowo, Fatimah Mohammad, and Sara El Kadri were re-elected as Board members.
