Who’s responsible for transforming our food systems? Governments, companies, schools, or citizens? 🤔 In her latest opinion piece, our CEO Christina Senn-Jakobsen explores how empowering citizens is critical to driving food system transformation. While systemic innovation is essential, it’s the everyday decisions we make - driven by taste, price, and convenience - that ultimately shape the future. To make sustainable choices the norm, we need aligned policies, appealing innovations, and accessible options across the food ecosystem. Here are some of Christina’s key insights: 🌱 Policy alignment matters: Government subsidies and policies can directly influence sustainable food production and affordability. 🛒 Retailers hold power: Smart choice architecture - like placing sustainable options front and center - can nudge citizens toward better decisions. 👩🍳 Food service is crucial: Institutions and restaurants can introduce citizens to healthier, sustainable options in familiar settings. 🍴 Focus on the essentials: To empower change, sustainable options must be tasty, affordable, and convenient. Check out her full article here: https://lnkd.in/eHyiycmY It’s time to align incentives, rethink choices, and make sustainability irresistible. How do you shape the future of food? Start by asking Gen Z. 💡 Valley partner Givaudan - Taste & Wellbeing is taking a bold step to engage the next generation in transforming food as we know it. Partnering with Moonshot Pirates, they’ve launched the 'Shape the Future' Challenge. 🤝 This is a global initiative inviting Gen Z innovators to design alternative proteins that go beyond mimicking meat, fish, or dairy with the goal to create affordable, nutritious, and sustainable solutions for the future of food. The response has been huge. Over 1,000 Gen Z participants, aged 15-24, have stepped up to share their vision for revolutionary protein concepts. Givaudan is taking it a step further by providing mentorship and access to its global innovation ecosystem, ensuring their ideas are nurtured and refined into real-world solutions 👏 The finalists will present their innovations to a jury of experts in January 2025, with winners getting the opportunity to visit MISTA in San Francisco. This collaboration highlights the power of bridging generations to build a more sustainable, inclusive food system. What if greenhouses could grow your crops AND generate clean energy? 🌱 🇨🇭Swiss startup Voltiris is making it happen. Using spectral filtering, Voltiris’s tech splits sunlight into what plants need and what they don’t ☀️ The result? Crops soak up the light they need for growth, while the unused wavelengths power high-efficiency solar cells to generate renewable energy right inside the greenhouse. With energy costs spiraling, this tech isn’t just clever, it’s essential. 🎤 CEO Nicolas Weber says Voltiris doesn’t just electrify greenhouses - it boosts plant health by removing light that stresses crops, creating better growing conditions and cutting costs in the process: “By filtering light, we remove specific wavelengths that usually harm or stress crops. This improves the greenhouse climate significantly, getting growers very excited”. From tomatoes in the Netherlands to peppers in Switzerland, Voltiris is scaling up fast. Their mission? Turn every greenhouse into a carbon-free production powerhouse. Less fossil fuel, more food, and smarter tech to bridge the gap 🙌.
