IT’S GETTING HOT IN THE GERMAN BUNDESTAG
TOO HOT TO IGNORE: Today, at a political round table in the German Bundestag, I discussed the hot topic of saving energy in the building sector together with MP Thomas Heilmann, MP Helmut Kleebank, MP Julia Verlinden, MP Bernhard Hermann, Wibke Werner, Tanja Loitz, Dr. Christian Rohrlack, Christian Noll, and around 40 other representatives from the political arena, industry, and associations. Thank you all for an inspiring debate!
GRUNDFOS, and in particular Ulrike Wagner, initiated the round table and organized it together with our partners co2online gGmbH (non profit) and Oventrop GmbH & Co. KG, with the support of Deutsche Unternehmensinitiative Energieeffizienz e. V. (DENEFF).
FROM BELIEF TO ACTION: At GRUNDFOS we are convinced that energy efficiency is the key to reducing energy demand – as also emphasized by the International Energy Agency (IEA). That's why today I called for more attention to be paid to cost-effective energy efficiency measures. These not only make sense in terms of climate policy, but also economically and socially.
WHAT ABOUT THE CLIMATE GOALS? Did you know that 30% of total CO₂ emissions are caused by building operations (according to the Federal Environment Agency)? This means that the energy efficiency of buildings is crucial to achieving Germany's climate goals.
ONE POSITIVE STEP DOESN'T GET US FAR ENOUGH: The obligation to carry out heating inspections for larger residential buildings, which went into effect in Germany on October 1st 2024, is a great first step, but in order to achieve real results, further measures to optimize energy efficiency should be taken.
A STAGGERING EXAMPLE: Inefficient circulator pumps are the third largest consumer of electricity in households, after freezers and tumble dryers. Take a wild guess – how many outdated circulator pumps do you think are still in use in Germany? 15 million, ladies and gentlemen. If that’s not a fiery number, I don’t know what is!
MY CALL TO POLITICIANS, ORGANIZATIONS AND THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY: give more priority to cost-effective energy saving measures in the building sector, such as replacing inefficient circulator pumps and balancing heating systems!
