Simulating the Future - to support the sustainable management of our planet
Info
nextGEMS is a collaborative European project. It will tap expertise from fourteen European Nations to develop two next generation (storm-resolving) Earth-system Models. Through breakthroughs in simulation realism, these models will allow us to understand and reliably quantify how the climate will change on a global and regional scale, and how the weather, including its extreme events, will look like in the future. nextGEMS is funded through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the grant agreement number 101003470.

How does soil impact rainfall? 🌍💧 #StormResolvingSimulations can help with the answer! 💡 A groundbreaking study by Junhong Lee and Cathy Hohenegger reveals a surprising twist in how soil moisture influences #precipitation. Unlike what coarse-resolution models suggest, the feedback between soil moisture and rainfall is weaker, and even negative! 🌧️ This means drier soils can actually promote precipitation, reducing the role of soil moisture in driving rainfall patterns. These findings challenge long-held assumptions and offer new perspectives on land-atmosphere interactions. 🌱🌦 📖 Read more in our blogpost: https://buff.ly/4f8oG4f #ClimateScience #ClimateModelling #EarthSystemModelling #Atmosphere #StormResearch #SoilMoisture #ScienceCommunication #nextGEMS

#DestinE builds on and fosters european collaboration ; so bringing people together to work on specific topics and overcome challenges is key for #DestinE success. And #hackathons like the one our #ClimateDigitalTwin partners organised in Hamburg, are a proved and tested receipy for making stepwise advances towards our goals - following in the steps of the nextGEMS | next Generation Earth Modelling Systems hackathons to advance the km-scale models underpinning the #DestinE #DigitalTwins.
🌍🌐 Collaboration is key for advancing Destination Earth. Just over six months into phase II of the #DestinE initiative, experts from all over Europe met in Hamburg for a project meeting and hackathon to discuss crucial next steps and accelerate progress of the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT). The Climate DT is implemented by a strong partnership led by CSC – IT Center for Science, in close collaboration with ECMWF. 💻 The four-day hackathon was a perfect opportunity for scientists to work collaboratively on the challenges identified in the project meeting. A major theme of the hackathon was the use of #AI and #MachineLearning and how they can be used to quantify uncertainties in the Climate DT outputs and enhance user interaction. 🇪🇺 The Destination Earth initiative shows how collaboration throughout Europe can drive innovation and progress for tackling the most pressing climate challenges, by bringing together diverse expertise from research, operational centres and industry. 🎥 Watch the video below to hear from scientists about the collaborative work on the Climate DT.
