🎉 Exciting News! From today on, there will be a lot more shitposting on this page! 💩 😂 I am thrilled to announce that #Rockchar is getting a little sister: #SUPERCHAR. The focus of this small side project is on developing a cost-effective, slow-fertilizing biochar derived from a highly abundant biomass that we produce ourselves: feces, poop, shit, sewage sludge, call it what you like. 😉 Potassium and phosphorus are critical nutrients in global food production and the recycling from poo is essential for our future. SUPERCHAR provides ✔ The use of cheap, highly abundant feedstock ✔ The elimination of virus and pharmaceuticals from poo ✔ A slow-release of potassium and phosphorus ✔ CO₂ sequestration ✔ Nutrient recycling from organic waste and circular economy AF ✔ Minimizing the reliance on mineral resources ✔ Reducing the carbon footprint of fertilizers ✔ A simplified mineral-doping of biochar to increase scalability I’m also excited to collaborate again with Novocarbo but also with AZV Südholstein and Goldeimer to bring this vision to life. The high-impact, high-risk, high-fun project is funded by Hamburg Innovation GmbH and takes place at Universität Hamburg. Follow if you are interested in sustainability, agriculture, or carbon solutions. Feedback is always welcome. Let’s work together to create a more sustainable future! 🌱💚 #SUPERCHAR #Rockchar #PooforFuture #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateChange #CarbonDioxideRemoval #Biochar #CircularEconomy #Research #Innovation #PhosphorusRecycling On the photos you see the first steps of getting the poo and drying it. You can imagine that the neighbours were delighted.
Info
ROCKCHAR is a science project to explore the potential of combining mineral weathering and biochar for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). To create a "doped" biochar industrial side products such as returned concrete, steelslag or rock dust will be pyrolysed together with biomass. The project will clarify if carbon dioxide removal through mineral weathering, biomass stabilisation and soil improvement will be realised by the specific materials and if the use of industrial side products can provide benefits for the properties of biochar, for the CDR potential and economic feasibility. This project is funded by the Klaus Tschira Booster Fund.

Recently, Birte Seffert from the German Scholars Organization e.V. (GSO) visited Rockchar to see the #boost that the Booster fund gave me and my career. The booster fund is funded by the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and I highly recommended every postdoc to apply for it.
𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀: 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟭 𝗼𝗳 𝟮: 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 Today, we’re introducing Dr. Maria-Elena Vorrath, a geoscientist and postdoc at the Universität Hamburg and current Klaus Tschira Boost Fund Fellow. Visiting Elena, our colleague Birte Seffert learned more about industry cooperation and visibility, uncovering some exciting new opportunities! 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮´𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁? She is conducting research to address the climate crisis by combining rock weathering and biochar for efficient carbon dioxide removal, calling her project Rockchar. The process, co-pyrolysis, heats materials without oxygen, transforming them into char without burning. The method merges the benefits of both materials, creating a stable carbon-rich product that stores carbon, improves soil health, enhances drought resilience, and supports circular waste streams. Elena reached out to companies for rock samples and biochar connections, and found a strong willingness to collaborate! Her tips for 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: ➡️ Proactive networking—both through personal contacts and those of others—is key. ➡️ Highlight what makes your project unique and its potential commercial value. ➡️ Give back by offering to present your work, sharing progress, and tagging partners in your posts. And cooperate with your institution's press department! To be more accessible and impactful, Elena created a LinkedIn account for Rockchar & Superchar, which now has over 600 followers, produces and distributes branded stickers to raise awareness. This Visibility has led to consulting offers from companies, making her projects into research initiatives and platforms for Elena to present her expertise. 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮´𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆: 🔸 Academic articles alone won’t reach the right audience when trying to solve real-world problems. 🔸 Industry requires different standards—while lab measurements are highly accurate, larger error ranges are acceptable in production. 🔸 Industry moves faster than academia, and sometimes, academia can slow things down with extensive setups and studies. 🔸 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 – getting further education can be a good investment for that. Elena concludes: „Rockchar was a good practice for me - now I know what’s important in setting up this kind of project. The Klaus Tschira Boost Fund simply boosted things brilliantly for me! We’re excited to follow Elena’s journey and see the lasting impact of her work! 🚀The Klaus Tschira Boost Fund is a joint program by GSO and Klaus Tschira Stiftung offering flexible funding and career development to promote researchers in the Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Science. #BoostFellows #KTBoostFund
