Four teams have taken their #research to the next level with our #RWTHInnovationSprint | The funding mechanism helped them to #prototype their ideas and validate the commercial viability of their technologies. About a year ago, research teams from RWTH Aachen University and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen had the chance to convince our external jury of researchers, industry experts and entrepreneurs of the innovative power and potential of their startup ideas to create lasting impact on industry and society. Four of them succeeded and were selected for the fifth round of the RWTH Innovation Sprint: ▪ naion.tech ▪ Photom ▪ Pulse of Production ▪ SA-Dynamics The outstanding technologies developed by the selected teams range from nanofiltration membranes and spectral material identification to the efficient maintenance of tools in sheet metal forming processes and the sustainable production of insulation textiles. Over the past 12 months, the teams have received financial support to test their technologies and validate their startup ideas by building prototypes. Taking Germany to a new level as a center of innovation with the Gateway Factory | In June of this year, Gateway Factory was selected as one of 15 projects to make it to the first phase of the upcoming "Startup Factory" funding initiative by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Following the announcement by Robert Habeck, RWTH Aachen University, the University of Cologne, and the Start2 Group are working closely together to develop the concept of the new innovation hub. As the name suggests, the Gateway Factory is designed to combine the attributes associated with a factory with the innovative power of our excellent research in the region. The goal is to support research-based start-ups in the critical pre-scale-up phase, focussing on four industry verticals: Personal Health, Sustainable Infrastructure Mobility, Future Computing Engineering, and Future Regulatory Demands. We are delighted to be part of this new hub and help university spin-offs take the next step in scaling their business and creating #InnovationWithImpact! #RWTHstartup RIIICO receives Siemens Inventor of the Year Award | The Aachen-born start-up with roots in RWTH Aachen University took home Siemens‘ prestigious Inventors of the Year Award in the category "Open Innovation" for its breakthrough #AI technology. The award presented by Siemens CTO Peter Koerte honors RIIICO’s unique solution for transforming #3D factory scans into engineering-friendly 3D models. “Being the first start-up ever to receive this award is a tremendous honor to our entire team that has been working really hard on this technology for more than 4 years,” said Jan Büchsenschütz, co-founder and COO of RIIICO who accepted the award on behalf of the team on Wednesday evening. And throughout those years of technology development, RWTH's long-standing partner Siemens has been a strong ally of the young start-up. The team's #SuccessStory began in Aachen in 2021, when Jan Büchsenschütz, Felix Fink and Patrick Mertens decided to turn their idea of visual factory twins based on 3D scanning and AI into reality and founded their own start-up RIIICO. As part of our Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystem Aachen Arc, the three former students at RWTH Aachen University pitched their technology to the university's strategic partner Siemens. Since then, the founders and industry experts have been working together closely across different factories in many use-cases. The Inventors of the Year Award marks the latest milestone in the close collaboration between RIIICO and Siemens, highlighting the importance of cooperation between research, start-ups and industry. Congratulations to the entire team on this remarkable achievement! #SiemensRIEAachenArc #technology #transfer #innovation #startups #entrepreneurship #deeptech

Researchers, students and start-ups kick-off the brand-new #RWTHExpertHub #NeuroSys | Last week, we celebrated the launch of our new Expert Hub focusing on innovation in the field of #neuromorphic #computing and #AI #hardware. Our sixth Expert Hub aims to nourish interdisciplinary exchange between students, researchers interested in entrepreneurship, as well as start-ups, well-established companies and further relevant stakeholders in the field. The event was opened by Prof. Peter Letmathe, who welcomed the guests and encouraged the diverse audience to use the opportunity to talk to experts, ask questions, and discuss possible solutions. In the first keynote of the day, Prof. Max Lemme (ELD, RWTH Aachen University) took the participants on a deep dive into the origins of the Expert Hub in the NeuroSys Cluster and the impact of the Cluster4Future on the Aachen region. Dr. Dr. Michael Riesener, Dr. Roberta Caterino and Dr. Tobias Recker then continued with a brief overview of how RWTH Innovation facilitates #EntrepreneurialTransfer at RWTH Aachen University, before elaborating on the structure and function of the new Expert Hub NeuroSys. Next, Dr. Mareike Smolka and Dr. Frieder Bögner (Human Technology Center) held an interactive session on socio-ethical perspectives on neuromorphic computing research and technology development, asking thought-provoking questions and sharing their insights on this highly debated topic. In the second part of the event, Jasmin Quill and Lennart Stoepel (Chair of Management Accounting) walked the audience through value chains of the semiconductor industry and their implications for neuromorphic hardware. A different perspective was added by Dr. Ansgar Schleicher (TVF | TechVision Fonds), who looked at challenges and opportunities of AI hardware through an investor's eyes. Last but not least, PD Dr. Felix Gremse (Gremse-IT) invited the participants to explore f(o)unding opportunities for SMEs, specifically focusing on IT businesses. The program was wrapped up by a panel discussion with Dr. Sebastian Dreßen (Siemens), Dr. Joseph Pankert (Pankert Consultants) and Dr. Florian Merget (aiXscale Photonics GmbH), who answered questions by Dr. Sabine Kaiser on the role of startups in the transfer of AI-based solutions. After the program, the speakers and participants stayed for an insightful networking session, exhibitions by Stadt Aachen, AGIT MBH and KI.NRW as well as poster presentations by AiML Technology, Rewafe, Stadt Aachen Wirtschaftsförderung, EDIH Rheinland, Forschungszentrum Jülich, the Neuroelectronic Interfaces Research Group, the Chair of Integrated Digital Systems and Circuit Design and the Institute for Materials in Electrical Engineering 1. Thank you to all speakers, presenters, exhibitors, and participants for joining us in fostering and collaborating on #InnovationWithImpact in neuromorphic computing and AI hardware! #ESCNRW #technology #transfer #innovation #startups #entrepreneurship #deeptech
