  • In the latest The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) report our team was pleased to be able to share some of the activities we're undertaking in the UK to widen participation in engineering from beyond the traditional pools of talent. We're breaking down barriers to opportunities and encouraging participation from oft-neglected parts of society - typically those affected by socio-economic restrictions, gender and neurodiversity. It's not a "one size fits all" approach - we'll still use CVs for many parts of the business for example, but by doing things differently this exposes us to more candidates with excellent potential and, we hope, encourages and supports more people who could not have previously considered a career in engineering to take the next steps. Our thanks to our excellent UK-based early-talent colleagues who have made this happen. The Siemens section is on Pages 64 & 65. https://lnkd.in/dyq932_6

UK Head of Research & Innovation Ecosystems for Siemens Foundational Technologies

I have a confession to make. I’m a history graduate. There - I said it. I have absolutely no idea how I’ve ended up doing what I do, but I’m here now so there you are. On my degree one of my modules was (something like) “The Rise of Technology” - so the (first) Industrial Revolution, the emergence of new technologies, the rapid rise of factories and urbanisation and the acceleration of scientific curiosity in a predominantly religious era. All of this came flooding back today when I visited the AMRC in Sheffield and saw 200+ year old concepts being used to address 21st challenges - in this case 3D weaving of carbon fibre for use in (for example) the aerospace and automotive sectors, using (admittedly extremely modern!) Jaquard loom type machinery. For reference, in the early 1800s Jaquard invented a new method of weaving complex patterns into textiles by introducing a punch card system which replaced the (normally a) small child sitting atop the loom, reduced the costs of manufacturing and increased production significantly. In addition it can be claimed that this technology gave rise to the birth of modern computer programming through its binary process (the punch cards = ‘hole’ or ‘no hole’). Indeed, when Babbage introduced his ideas for the Analytical Engine, Ada Lovelace remarked, “The Analytical Engine weaves algebraic patterns, just as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers and leaves”. This article from the Science & Industry Museum explains it really well: https://lnkd.in/eS82Vdac So why is this relevant? I think it’s incredible to think that technologies that were invented over 200 years ago are still playing a part in today’s scientific landscape and that they’ve been able to, unwittingly, lead us into new technological areas as well. Who knows where the advanced scientific research that my colleagues and our global Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystem partners are working on today will end up a few hundred years from now?

  • 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐈𝐈𝐈𝐂𝐎! We are thrilled to announce that RIIICO has been named Siemens #InventorsOfTheYear 2024, an award proudly handed over by Peter Koerte! 🚀 This historic #OpenInnovation award (the first ever for a startup) highlights how collaboration between industry, research, and entrepreneurship ecosystems leads to success. Jan accepted the award on behalf of the team. He and co-founders Felix and Patrick, former RWTH Aachen University students, one of Siemens’ partner universities. They developed their business idea as students and benefited from the expertise and support of the Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystem Aachen Arc and RWTH Innovation, which opened doors for this incredible journey. They founded RIIICO in 2021 and have grown to 24 employees from eight countries. RIIICO AI invention supports manufacturers in transforming their existing factory shop floors. The invention enables users to get a comprehensive, engineer-friendly 3D model of their factory and each object it contains. Welcome to the #IndustrialMetaverse. Thank you, RIIICO, for your innovation and trust. Let's continue building something great together in the ecosystem!

Fostering Strategic University - Industry Collaborations at Siemens

🌟 Exciting Day in Berkeley and at UC Berkeley Simons Institute Day! 🌟 I had the pleasure of visiting University of California, Berkeley for the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing Industry Day, and what an inspiring experience it was! 🌱✨ During the event, I connected with some brilliant minds. I met Sarah Ball, a PhD student from the relAI! - School from Technische Universität München and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, both partners in the #SiemensRIE Munich. It was also wonderful to meet Amy Ambrose, CFRE, MBA, MA, the organizer of this fantastic event. Kudos to her for orchestrating such a vibrant and innovative gathering! A special highlight was the talk given by my colleague Mareike Kritzler on Digital Twins for quality control and how universities and industry can work together sucessfully in collaboration projects 🤝 . The innovative spirit at UC Berkeley is both tangible and energizing 🔋. I love walking through the campus to our #Siemens office downtown. It makes me feel like a student again, with the world full of opportunities ahead of me, surrounded by brilliant and highly motivated minds. 🌟 I met with Eugen Solowjow from the AI & robotics 🤖 team of Siemens Technology, who has a rich history of collaborating with UC Berkeley on various research projects. I also caght up with Stuart Goose, who scouts promising startups for Siemens Digital Industry, not only in the Bay Area. Engaging in discussions with all of you always reinforces my belief that #SiemensRIE Bay Area has so much to offer. I am excited about the potential projects and partnerships that lie ahead Looking forward to more fruitful collaborations and connections! If you're in the Bay Area or at UC Berkeley and want to connect, text me! Let’s drive innovation together. 🚀 #SiemensRIE #Innovation #Collaboration #UCBerkeley #BayArea
