🌍 Resisting Through Practice: Dry Toilets as a Pathway to Sustainability 🌱 The way we manage our resources and care for our land is deeply connected to a history of struggle and resilience. In the context of the climate crisis, social inequalities, and dependence on extractivist systems, reconnecting with ancestral practices and adopting sustainable technologies can offer transformative solutions. In his insightful article, Juan Gabriel Urrego Zuluaga, Founder of the Colombian Community for Water Management, explores how dry toilets are more than just a technical solution. He arguments, that they represent a form of cultural resistance and a step toward sovereignty, challenging conventional waste management systems that rely heavily on water and costly infrastructure. “Inspired by the struggles of our ancestral communities, we can build a sustainable and just future. History shows that resilience is possible. Now it is our turn to act.” – Juan Gabriel Urrego 💡 Could dry toilets be the next step toward sustainable living? 📖 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/duBu4N_s 🔁 Join the conversation and share your thoughts in the Comment Section! #Sustainability #WaterManagement #DryToilets #CulturalResistance #EnvironmentalJustice #CircularEconomy #RegenerativePractices #ClimateAction #SocialInnovation #JuanGabrielUrrego #AncestralKnowledge #CommunityEmpowerment #WasteManagement #SustainableDevelopment

SuSanA is an informal network of people and organisations who share a common vision on sustainable sanitation.
Info
SuSanA is an informal network of people and organisations who share a common vision on sustainable sanitation and who want to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG6. Learn more about our definition of sustainable sanitation here. SuSanA came into existence in early 2007. Since then, it has been providing a platform for coordination and collaborative work. SuSanA connects members to a community of people with diverse expertise and opinions. SuSanA also serves as sounding board for innovative ideas. Finally, SuSanA contributes to policy dialogue through joint publications, meetings and initiatives. The SuSanA website – with its library, project database and discussion forum – is an important resource for anyone wanting to explore the possibilities of sustainable sanitation. SuSanA is not itself an organisation but a loose voluntary network to which partners and individual members contribute at their own expense. The secretariat is currently carried out by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Bonn, Germany.

🔄 Reposting from Paresh, our SuSanA Forum moderator and active India Chapter member: Paresh shares key insights from the Global South Academic Conclave. His takeaways highlight the urgent need for better water governance, sustainable wastewater practices, and policy shifts driven by tools like SFDs. 💬 Check at the very interesting discussion happening in the comments and share your thoughts! What are your perspectives on balancing water access, reuse, and policy reforms? #WaterManagement #ClimateResilience #FSM #SuSanA
I couldn't attend the Global South Academic Conclave organised by the Center for Water and Sanitation (CWAS), CRDF, CEPT University this year, but the live streaming enabled me to listen to an inspiring keynote by Sunita Narain. I am sharing my takeaways below for the benefit of others who could not attend and hope to continue the conversation beyond the conference. Also, encouraging to see the use of SFDs in bringing about a policy shift towards FSM. The basis of the water issues we face today is our continued mismanagement of water; climate change exacerbates the issue and tips us over. If we get our water and wastewater practices right, we can build for resilience and ensure that the worst impacts of climate change are avoided. Extreme climate events not only affect the poor and the marginalised the most but also take away their ability to cope. The agenda for practice and research includes three parts – Better management of competing demands for water, efficient use of water and management of pollution Make water affordable for all by increasing the use of local resources rather than pumping water from a distance, harvesting rainwater, recharging groundwater, including through water bodies, and reuse of wastewater Alternative solutions like FSM demonstrate how the challenge of unmanaged wastewater can be rapidly dealt with in a cost-effective manner and are challenging the centralised imagination. More research is needed to address the challenge of low-capacity utilisation of FSTPs, efficient treatment, and reuse of treated water and biosolids. Research is also needed to make FSM more efficient, equitable, and sustainable. Use of water bodies as sponges to mitigate extreme climate events, allow them to be used for tertiary treatment of wastewater and make available water during scarcity Treated bio-solids should be reused in agriculture and complete the nutrient cycle. The focus of wastewater treatment should be reuse. The stringent treatment standards need to be revised for reuse for land-based applications rather than focusing on disposal into water bodies Engaging with the politics of development and sharing of resources is necessary and inevitable. 📢 Call for Proposals: Publishing through the Community – Advances in Interactive Research on Informal Sanitation Call for Proposals for a session at the RGS-IBG Conference, taking place 27–29 August 2025 in Birmingham, UK. This session builds on a forthcoming IWA Publishing series and explores how research interacts with and transforms community understanding in real or proximate time. 🔍 Contributors should visualize their research on this topic at the session in different ways be it artistic, analytical, or narrative. Selected authors will have the chance to publish in the IWA series. 🌍 Why does this matter? Over a billion people globally rely on #informalsanitation, a growing challenge that requires inclusive, locally led, and community-driven approaches. This session will explore how interactive research can optimize the benefits for the people, places, and processes that shape sanitation solutions. 💡 Guiding Questions: ✔️ What multiple knowledge systems do informal sanitation issues entail? ✔️ Who are ‘communities’ in this context and what form of interaction works for whom? ✔️ What epistemic/methodological influences do the involvement of lay people result in? ✔️ What level of knowledge reproduction/add-ons can interactive research result? ✔️ What tensions and challenges do interactive research pose and how to address them? 📩 Submission Details: Submit a 250-word abstract (academic article or artistic product description) to m.roy1@lancaster.ac.uk by 5 PM, February 21, 2025. Decisions will be communicated by February 28, 2025. Find more information here: https://lnkd.in/eMCKhD6B Let’s rethink how research interacts with and empowers communities! #SanitationResearch #CommunityEngagement #InteractiveKnowledge #IWA #CallForProposals
