Transcultural Caravan

*Impressions from the Annual Global Symposium & Transcultural Leadership Summit 2024* What a transcultural journey with various inputs and discussions to explore the futures of transculturality from education to leadership! Around 200 people from all around the world joined the event. We thank all of you for being part of this and contributing to the discussions, on our Miro board, and in the breakout sessions! We will make the recording of the event available for the participants as soon as possible and look forward to discussing these topics further with anyone interested! Prof. Dr. Darla K. Deardorff emphasized in her welcome address that the mission of the World Council on Intercultural and Global Competence is all about connections - to connect students, practitioners, policymakers, educators, and researchers across disciplines, languages, and geographies - and to learn from and with each other. Transculturality calls on us, especially in these times of deep division, to come together and focus on what unites us as human beings rather than what divides us. According to Darla Deardorff, the power of relationships is at the heart of transculturality. Through the relationships we build, we can bridge the divide and create a more inclusive, connected, and just world. Prof. Dr. Josef Wieland emphasized that our times' challenges also stem from diverse cultural understandings and the failure to establish new commonalities. He argues that transculturality is grounded in the shared human experience, recognizing our common challenges and the need for cooperative solutions. Transculturality involves fostering relationality through interactive mutual transformation and learning, where individuals and cultures collaboratively create new shared values and commonalities. Transculturality with its focus on interconnections, flows, interdependencies, and permeations of cultures invites us to focus on a relational view of cultural complexity. A transcultural and relational approach to cultural complexity has multiple implications for education, management, and leadership. This is the motivation for the event that is organized by the World Council’s working group “Transcultural Cooperation and Leadership” in cooperation with the Transcultural Caravan Network. A highlight of our event will be a conversation with and between Kenneth Gergen and Bayo Akomolafe to explore the potential and implications of a relational perspective. Bayo Akomolafe (Ph.D.), rooted with the Yoruba people in a more-than-human world, is the father to Alethea Aanya and Kyah Jayden Abayomi, the grateful life-partner to Ije, son and brother. A widely celebrated international speaker, posthumanist thinker, poet, teacher, public intellectual, essayist, and author of two books, These Wilds Beyond our Fences: Letters to My Daughter on Humanity’s Search for Home (North Atlantic Books) and We Will Tell our Own Story: The Lions of Africa Speak, Bayo Akomolafe is the Founder of The Emergence Network, a planet-wide initiative that seeks to convene communities in new ways in response to the critical, civilizational challenges we face as a species. He is host of the postactivist course/festival/event, ‘We Will Dance with Mountains’. He currently lectures at Pacifica Graduate Institute, California. He sits on the Board of many organizations including Science and Non-Duality (US) and Ancient Futures (Australia). Prof. Dr. Kenneth Gergen is internationally known for his contributions to social constructionist theory, technology and cultural change, and relational theory and practice. Join us on the 22nd of November and participate in the interactive workshop"Co-creating intercultural scenes with Gen AI using a case study framework" hosted by Dr. Patty Goodman Hayward, Dr. Lucy Bunning, and Dr Wallace Lages from Northeastern University, USA. Dr. Lages is an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Art + Design and the Khoury College of Computer Sciences. His research focuses on user experience of Augmented and Virtual Reality applications, leveraging methods from disciplines such as design, engineering, and psychology. His artistic practice has been part of inaugural exhibitions and has been displayed in Brazil, the United States, Italy, and Singapore. He was also a co-founder of the game studio Ilusis Interactive Graphics. Prior to joining Northeastern University, Lages was an Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Lages holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from Virginia Tech, and a MS and BS degrees in Computer Science from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. She develops curriculum and teaches English language, communication, and service-learning courses for international students. She was a Faculty Scholar with Northeastern's Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. Her classroom-based research focuses on students’ language development during service-learning, class participation, on increasing students’ engagement and language development in classroom and community settings. She develops and teaches speaking, listening, and service-learning courses. Dr. Bunning earned her PhD in Educational Studies, with a concentration in adult second language education, from Lesley University. Join us on the 22nd of November and we will discuss this question with Tião Santos. Tião Santos, a Brazilian waste picker and activist, gained international recognition through his work featured in the documentary Waste Land. Directed by Lucy Walker, Waste Land follows Tião and other catadores (waste pickers) who work in Jardim Gramacho, one of the world’s largest landfills, located outside Rio de Janeiro. The film highlights Tião's journey as he collaborates with artist Vik Muniz to create large-scale portraits made from recycled materials collected from the landfill. This project not only sheds light on the lives and resilience of Brazil's waste-picking community but also brings attention to environmental and social justice issues, challenging viewers to reconsider waste, value, and dignity. Tião Santos has since become a prominent voice for sustainable practices and the rights of informal workers, embodying resilience and hope.
