🌊 📣 The Blue Tourism Initiative advocates for a stronger focus on sustainability and provides feedback to the European Ocean Pact, which can play a crucial role in fostering a more sustainable and integrated approach to ocean governance by explicitly addressing the role of coastal and marine tourism, promoting stakeholder engagements. To follow some of our key suggestions: 🔹 It is crucial for the Pact to recognise the cumulative impacts of tourism on marine and coastal ecosystems, especially in the Mediterranean, where high tourism pressure heightens ecological vulnerability in its regions. Enhancing mitigation, adaptation, and resilience in coastal and marine tourism destinations. 🔹 It is important to ensure that tourism is explicitly considered in maritime spatial planning processes at the EU and national levels, including the designation of appropriate zones for tourism activities and the management of potential conflicts with other uses. 🏖️ 🛳️ 🔹 Furthermore, it is essential that the Pact recognise the crucial role of the tourism sector in reenergizing local economies, generating income, and fostering community development. 🌍 🔗 Info on the full feedback: https://shorturl.at/5c59G eco-union IDDRI

Advancing a greener & more inclusive Mediterranean 🌍 Last Friday in #Barcelona, eco-union took part as a speaker in the Union for the Mediterranean open consultation on its future vision and mandate. This consultation, co-organized with the European Institute of the Mediterranean, brought together institutions, researchers, and civil society to discuss the UfM’s evolving role in tackling regional challenges. Key topics included: 🔷 Strengthening cooperation on climate, urban development & social equity; 🔷 Reinforcing the UfM’s role in post-crisis recovery; 🔷 Advancing sustainability and inclusivity in the Mediterranean. 📢 eco-union will present the Blue Tourism Flagship Initiative at the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) meeting in #Istanbul! 🌍 We are proud to play a key role in the MCSD Ad-hoc Meeting (Feb 12-13, 2025), where Jeremie Fosse will discuss the Flagship Initiative on #BlueTourism within the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD). 🚀 Key goals of the initiative: ✅ Promote sustainable tourism policies that balance economic growth with environmental responsibility; ✅ Strengthen collaboration with major regional actors such as the WestMed Initiative and Interreg Euro-MED Programme; ✅ Implement sustainable blue tourism through various pilot sites in Mediterranean countries as part of the Blue Tourism Initiative; ✅ Reduce plastic waste in hotels and encourage eco-friendly practices in the hospitality sector; ✅ Engage youth and public and private stakeholders in shaping a greener future for Mediterranean tourism. A big step for ocean protection! 🐠 🇪🇺 #Spain becomes the first #EU country and the 16th worldwide to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty, aiming to protect 30% of international waters by 2030—a huge leap from the current 1%. 👉A big milestone, but the work isn’t done—we need more countries to join and ensure effective implementation to tackle overfishing, pollution, and deep-sea mining. For the treaty to take effect, 60 countries must ratify it.
