Did you know healthy soil has its own soundtrack? 🎶 Healthy soils are essential for our food, clean air, and water, yet over 75% of soils worldwide are degraded. New research from Flinders University in Australia has revealed that vibrant soil is alive with sound. By placing microphones in the soil, scientists are capturing the clicks and crackles of ants, worms, and other tiny creatures—sounds that signal soil biodiversity and health! This new acoustic method offers a non-invasive way to monitor soil health, making it easier for researchers and farmers to detect and address soil degradation. In the future, soundscapes from thriving soils might even be used to restore degraded lands, harnessing nature's own rhythms for regeneration. 🌱 How Does Soil Health Affect Human Wellbeing? 🌱 A new analysis from the Save Soil movement highlights the critical connections between soil quality and human health, calling for urgent action to stop soil degradation worldwide. Backed by UNEP, UNCCD, and other global organisations, the report reveals how soil health impacts everything from nutrition and mental well-being to community resilience and farmer health. Key insights include: 🥕 Nutritional Quality: Declining soil health is linked to reduced nutrient content in food, impacting our gut health and immunity. 🌍 Ecosystem Benefits: Healthy soils support clean air, water, and climates, contributing to healthier living environments. 🧠 Mental Health: Poor soils lead to micronutrient deficiencies, which are tied to mental health issues, such as depression. 💪 Farmer Wellbeing: Soil degradation’s impact on farmers’ livelihoods and mental health is significant, highlighting the need for sustainable practices. Save Soil urges global leaders to prioritise soil regeneration as a public health issue. 📌 It’s time for another #BioPills post - this one from BBioNets! 😉 ♻️The #CircularBioeconomy in primary production focuses on maximising #biomass utilisation within the #agriculture, #forestry, and #food production sectors, all with the goal of enhancing #sustainability.🌱 Earlier this year, our Forest and Agriculture Networks organised a series of workshops to identify the key biomass #resources available and assess their current #applications across the six #BBioNets countries (Ireland, Spain, Greece, Italy, Poland, and the Czech Republic). 💡 🔎 The #FANs also worked to pinpoint and prioritise the essential processing #needs necessary for a socio-ecological transition towards a fully circular economy. 📝 Our first #article, prepared by project partner Teagasc, provides an insightful synopsis of the collected information.
