As we enter 2025 (and Happy New Year to you!), I realise that this marks my 40th year in the Live Event industry!
In 1985, I joined Paul Farrah Sound, a company specialising in hiring audio equipment and engineers for the conference and theatre industries.
In 1987, I moved on to PurchasePoint, one of the top five production companies of the time, renowned for its diverse skill set.
Then, in 1991, Technovation was born — the company where I still proudly work to this day.
Over these 40 years, many things have changed, especially on the technical side. We've seen groundbreaking developments in video, LED technology (both for projection and lighting), and innovative set-building materials, to name just a few.
Sustainability has also become a key focus. Back in the day, “recycling” was little more than a Sunday morning—and sometimes afternoon—bike ride!
However, amidst all this change, some things remain constant. Most important of all are the PEOPLE. At the heart of everything we do in the Live Event industry are the people:
The people we work for.
The people in the audience.
The people we collaborate with.
And, of course, the people we live with, who graciously put up with the strange but wonderful nature of this industry and its unconventional hours.
Without a doubt, my past 40 years have been defined by the incredible people who have made this journey so enjoyable, informative, challenging, and full of learning opportunities. When asked what I’d be doing if I had a "proper" job, my answer is always the same:
“I wouldn’t be the person I am today, nor would I have had the experiences and opportunities that I’ve been so fortunate to enjoy. Most importantly, I wouldn’t have met the amazing people who have had such a profound impact on my life.”
So, here’s to a wonderful and successful 2025 for all!
And hopefully, I’ve got a few more years in me yet.
