Rising global temperatures and extreme weather events bring an alarming increase in climate-sensitive diseases. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, accelerates global warming and poses significant health risks. While low concentrations of methane are relatively harmless, exposure to higher levels can lead to methane poisoning—a dangerous condition caused by the gas displacing oxygen in the air we breathe. Symptoms range from mood changes and mild physical discomfort to severe health complications like irregular breathing, dizziness, and even life-threatening cardiovascular or respiratory failure. This report delves into methane emissions' environmental and health impacts and highlights the urgent need for proactive management strategies. 𝑻𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏! 𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝑬𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝑺𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒕! As we draw closer to the end of 2024, we took time at our annual staff retreat to reflect on the milestones achieved, challenges faced, and lessons learned this year. Most of our discussions centred on the progress made under our 2020-2024 Strategic Plan, which concludes this year. We evaluated the impact of our work across critical areas, including revenue governance, contract governance, institutional development, climate change, energy transition, and diversity, equity, and inclusion in energy and extractive governance. These reflections are shaping the foundation as we chart a new course for the coming years, leveraging our gains to deepen our impact across Africa. Beyond work, we engaged in team bonding activities, strengthening the camaraderie that fuels our passion for driving change. Together, we are excited for what lies ahead as we continue to advocate for sustainable, inclusive development across the continent. We sincerely thank our partners, collaborators, and colleagues for supporting us on this journey. Here’s to a New Year filled with shared successes and impactful collaboration! #ACEP #HappyHolidays

Young people are the driving force behind Africa’s progress, and their empowerment is essential for shaping the continent’s future. At #ACEP, we are equipping the next generation of Pan-African leaders through the Next Generation Resource Governance Leaders Program to tackle complex governance challenges. On Wednesday, 4th December, 2024, we hosted a policy seminar and send-off ceremony for the 7th Cohort of the program. After 12 weeks of intensive training, these leaders presented innovative policy ideas on critical issues such as divestment and decommissioning in the oil and gas sector, sustainable energy storage, the impact of galamsey on water bodies, and clean cooking solutions for vulnerable communities. We look forward to seeing these ideas refined and published, contributing solutions to the key challenges in Africa’s energy and extractive sectors. As these emerging leaders move forward, we are confident they will use their skills to drive positive change, advancing good governance and sustainable development wherever they go. #NextGenLeaders Elfreda Agyemang -Duah Anna Grace Mkucha Joy Cheruto Maltiti Mohammed ogbode patience Abukari Alhassan Gomdah Maud Gracious Fuko Cynthia Nwaelu Onyinyechi

In an open letter to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President-Elect of the Republic of Ghana, Benjamin Boakye, our Executive Director, sheds light on pressing challenges in Ghana’s energy sector, including systemic waste, bloated agencies, and declining investor confidence. He calls for urgent reforms to address the staggering GHS 50 billion annual waste and restore stability in the sector. #ACEP remains committed to generating policy ideas in the public domain and hopes they will be embraced in good faith to support Ghana’s development. Africa Centre for Energy Policy reposted this
This week, I had the privilege of chairing a thematic session on Climate policy, Sustainable financing, and Business models at the Africa Center for Energy Policy's (ACEP) inaugural Climate Action conference. The interaction of these three elements is critical for effective climate action. Climate policy sets the framework and regulations that guide sustainable practices. Sustainable financing provides the necessary capital to implement these policies and support sustainable business models. My key takeaway from this event is that the decisions we make today will have far-reaching consequences for the resilient, low-carbon economy we're building for future generations. Addressing climate change demands a united effort, and the interconnectedness of climate policy, sustainable financing, and business models is crucial for effective climate action. #ESG #Climateaction #ACEP

Ahead of this pivotal moment, ACEP presents a detailed analysis of energy and extractive sector commitments in the manifestos of major political parties and movements. This report evaluates the feasibility and impact of these proposals, focusing on how they address Ghana’s challenges and align with its development goals. Let’s make decisions based on informed, critical thinking—not partisan loyalties. 🔗 Read the full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/ezQAJxTh #ACEP #Election2024 Oxfam in Ghana
