HKCS Receives Two Awards in the ‘Best Practices Sharing in Asia - Family Well-Being Project 2024’ 👏 The Project ‘Empowering SEN Families - Paradigm Shift from Traditional SEN Rehabilitation Service towards Trans-disciplinary Collaboration’ of our Child Rehabilitation Service (CRS) won the Gold Award and the Best Collaborative Award, among the 23 projects in the Asian region, in the Asian Family Summit (AFS) programme - the Best Practices Sharing in Asia - Family Well-Being Project 2024. Our Project aims to implement a paradigm shift towards a holistic, family-centred and need-based approach in preschool SEN rehabilitation services, facilitate trans-disciplinary collaboration among professionals and parents, and break down traditional siloed practices. Our survey found that 55.0% of drug abusers only seek detox services after using drugs for over three years, with 39.1% believing that drug abuse has no negative impact. Overestimating detox capabilities, underestimating the harm of drug abuse, and internalising society’s negative perceptions reduce the motivation for drug abusers to seek help. Even worse, the rise of ‘space oil’ may exacerbate the hidden drug use among younger people. Therefore, we hope all sectors of society collaborate in creating a more friendly and inclusive environment for those affected by drug abuse to seek help. 📷Exhibition: FAILURE REIMAGINED Our recent survey reveals that nearly half of Hong Kong youths tend to see themselves as failures. Moreover, over half of youths experienced secondary trauma from blame after experiencing failure, which negatively impacts their mental health. On 14 December, we released the survey results and hosted the ‘Exhibition: FAILURE REIMAGINED’, showcasing youth-curated works that redefine ‘failure’ and promote a positive perspective on facing setbacks. 📢 Hong Kong Inclusion Index 2024 This year, we launched Hong Kong’s first-ever ‘Inclusion Index’ survey, covering eight key areas: Employment, Leisure, Housing, Family Life, Social Life, Education, Healthcare, Culture, and Diversity. The results show that the Hong Kong Inclusion Index for 2024 is 69.44, which falls within the ‘average’ level. Among these areas, ‘Healthcare’ and ‘Housing’ are the most inclusive, while ‘Employment’ and ‘Education’ are the least inclusive. Additionally, groups such as males, South Asians, and residents of subdivided flats perceive society as less inclusive. [Outstanding Young Persons] 👏 Congratulations to Janet Kung HKCS congratulates Janet Kung on being awarded JCIHK’s ‘Ten Outstanding Young Person’. Her life story and spirit will spur inspiration among young people. In May 2024, she served as a guest speaker for our ‘Future Academy - Career and Life Development Service’, sharing her life story with over a hundred F.3 to F.5 students and their parents, demonstrating the possibilities of career development. Janet, the ‘Bun Queen’ (the female winner of the Annual Bun Scrambling Competition in 2019 and 2024) has successfully conquered the highest peaks in Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, and Malaysia since she was 17 years old. She is also Hong Kong’s first female ice climbing athlete to ascend Ama Dablam (6,812 meters). Janet is committed to her dreams, shifting from full-time to part-time nurse. Without government funding, she has become the sixth world-ranked ice climber (the highest record was 4th), bringing glory to Hong Kong. Her willingness to devote herself unreservedly to her interests and work at such a young age showcases the Hong Kong youth’s spirit – ‘Strive for the goal without regrets’. What challenges do children face when using adult cutlery? Parents recently experienced first-hand the difficulties children face when dining out at our ‘Child-friendly Award Scheme’ event. They realised that what’s normal for adults can be quite a challenge for little ones. In addition, text-only or foreign-language menus limit children’s participation. During the event, the children had the opportunity to change roles and become ‘little servers’, experiencing front-line catering tasks such as taking orders, serving food and cleaning up. We’re grateful to Luk Lam Dessert, one of our participating restaurants, for supporting this event. Our ‘Child-friendly Award Scheme’ encourages restaurants to incorporate child-friendly elements into their environment, equipment and staff attitudes. The scheme is now open for applications.
