About us

APC Microbiome Ireland is an internationally renowned SFI Research Centre which explores the role of the microbiome (microbiological community) in health and disease. The scale and scope of microbiome research has become one of the fastest moving areas of biology, of relevance to all branches of human medicine and veterinary science, and is of growing importance to the economic welfare of society. APC has created a trans-disciplinary environment conducive to innovation with a mission to link Irish science with industry and society through excellence in research, education and outreach. APC is a partnership between University College Cork, Teagasc Food Research Centre and the Cork and Mercy University Hospitals, and is home to a team of over 300 researchers and clinicians. APC collaborates with over 25 national and international industry partners from the food, agriculture, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and diagnostic sectors. APC research focuses on mining the microbiota to identify products (probiotic strains, metabolites, phage, prebiotics, anti-microbials etc) that can promote health and help prevent disease. This is of relevance to many populations, such as infants, athletes and elderly, and very relevant to disorders such as obesity, cardiovascular health, inflammation and colon cancer. APC operates in the functional food and pharmaceutical sectors, developing food and pharma solutions targeting the gut microbiota for health promotion throughout life.

Read the paper here: https://tr.ee/dmzuERZeWi The NiMe Diet is the Non-industrialized Microbiome Restore Diet. It was developed based on our understanding of how differences in the dietary habits of non-industrialized and industrialized human populations impact the gut microbiome, and how diet-microbiome interactions play a role in the development of chronic diseases (like diabetes and heart disease). The NiMe Diet mimics traditional, non-industrialized dietary habits to restore key functions of the gut microbiome adversely affected by industrialization and improve health. The principles of the NiMe diet are: - Make the majority of your diet whole-plant foods: This includes vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Diversity is key – eat a wide variety of whole-plant foods every day. - Eat a very high amount of dietary fibre: Aim for more than 40 grams of fibre daily. Increase the amount of fibre you eat slowly to avoid uncomfortable symptoms (like stomach cramps or bloating). - Choose plant-based proteins often This includes pulses (beans, peas, lentils), soy products (tofu, edamame, tempeh, fortified soy beverage), nuts, nut butters, and seeds. Eat a variety of these foods throughout the day. - If desired, include animal-based proteins less often Enjoy fish or poultry, with one daily serving maximum. Limit lean red meat to a weekly serving maximum. Enjoy low- or full-fat dairy products (<5% fat), like yogurt three times a week Avoid processed meats and high-fat dairy (cream, butter, high-fat cheese). - Avoid highly-processed foods. These are manufactured foods (made in factories) that are high in added sugar, salt, and/or fat. This includes processed meats, pastries, chips, and fast food, among others. Tip: Eat foods that your grandparents would have recognized, with ingredients that you have in your kitchen.
