The second European Grief Conference (EGC) takes place in Dublin, Ireland, November 11 - 13, 2024. The conference is hosted by Irish Hospice Foundation, in partnership with the Bereavement Network Europe (BNE), RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Danish National Center for Grief. The conference will be held at the historical and cultural sporting centre Croke Park in Dublin. The vision of EGC is to bring together researchers, practitioners, and educators to learn, share and feel inspired to collaborate around the development and implementation of effective and culturally sensitive bereavement care responses across Europe. The conference will be structured around a four-tiered needs-based bereavement care model, inspired by the evidence-based public health model as advanced by NICE (UK), Samar M Aoun, and others.

W tym miesiącu członkinie zarządu IDŚ działały równolegle na dwóch prestiżowych konferencjach: 🇵🇹 International Conference for Best Care for the Dying Person w Porto – Doktor Agata Malenda wzięła udział w tym wyjątkowym wydarzeniu skupionym wokół najlepszych praktyk w opiece nad osobami umierającymi. Podczas konferencji panowała budująca atmosfera współpracy i wymiany wiedzy. 🇮🇪 Anja Franczak oraz Maria Puchalska zawitały na European Grief Conference 2024 która w tym roku odbyła się w Dublinie (za dwa lata planujemy być na kolejnej edycji w Porto), pod wieloma względami była niesamowitym czasem. Mogłyśmy poczuć się jak we wspólnocie - w jednym plemieniu osób, dla których rozmowa o śmierci jest czymś normalnym i dobrym. 400 uczestniczek i uczestników z całego świata dzieliły się swoją wiedzą, by móc potem jeszcze lepiej nieść wsparcie w żałobie, ale przede wszystkim, by temat ten był normalizowany na najbardziej podstawowym społecznym i kulturowym poziomie. Była to również okazja do podpatrzenia: „jak to robią inni”. Jakie są już sprawdzone sposoby na edukowanie o umieraniu, śmierci i żałobie i wsparcia w tych obszarach, co działa, a co nie, na co zwrócić uwagę, jakich błędów nie popełniać. Ogromną siłą tej nasze wspólnoty jest autentyczna chęć wspierania się na poziomie międzynarodowym, bo choć, doświadczanie straty jest różne w zależności od kultury, w której jest przeżywane, naprawdę inspirujące jest poznawanie jak wielobarwny i złożony jest to proces w odległych i bliskich zakątkach świata. Polecamy przyszłą edycję, wszystkim, którzy pracują w obszarach końca życia i żałoby. How may we speak of unspeakable loss, and find meaning in words when the words themselves fail us? That is the question I sought to answer with my poster presentation at the #EGC2024 European Grief Conference 2024 focusing on how therapeutic writing and literary techniques can offer unique therapeutic properties when used in grief interventions at The Danish National Grief Center, Det Nationale Sorgcenter. European Grief Conference 2024 Dublin, Ireland 🇮🇪 Poster Presentation 🍀 Day 2🍀 "Cocreating a Bereavement Support advanced training curriculum for portuguese professionals", a research project for advanced training on death and grief education, using the Educational Design Research (EDR) method. And the result of Phase 3 "Mapping the training needs of Portuguese professionals on bereavement support", in a multidisciplinary approach (social workers, nurses, clinicians, gerontologists, educators). A lot of work... but I love every minute of it.

🎧 Listen back - Orla Keegan, our Director of Bereavement & Education, and Anna Lise Gordon, Professor of Education at St Mary’s University, Twickenham talked to Cormac Ó hEadhra on RTE Drivetime about #bereavement in education settings. Here are some key takeaways from their conversation: 👉 In the UK, 1 in 29 children will be bereaved of a parent or carer before they're 16-years-old. 👉 In Ireland, all pre-service teachers agree that they need to support bereaved children in the classroom, but only half feel confident doing so (based on 2019 research). 👉 It's important that teachers are equipped to have conversations with students about their grief. 👉 No child grieves the same, but all children need clear information about the death. I am back home from attending the European Grief Conference 2024 in Dublin this week. I had a great time connecting and spending time with colleagues, letting myself be inspired by research and practice in grief and bereavement, and diving deeper into collaborations. Thanks to everyone who came along to my workshop on Imagery Rescripting. This powerful intervention for aversive mental images offers interesting directions for the treatment of Prolonged Grief Disorder, as I outlined together with Muriel Hagenaars and Paul Boelen in an article published earlier this year (link in comments).

Leaving the European Grief Conference 2024 feeling incredibly inspired by the work being done by brilliant clinicians, researchers, and those with lived experiences to educate the public about grief, train therapists to support grief within their practice, and identify grievers who need additional help. I loved meeting so many volunteers from the Irish Hospice Foundation and connecting with members of the Irish and UK childhood bereavement network, who are doing amazing work supporting grieving children. And of course meeting new friends (Olga Lehmann, Ph.D - an author and psychologist!) and meeting collaborators/friends (Wendy Lichtenthal ) in person! I am already looking forward to #egc2026 in Porto.
