🔬 Exciting progress in ALS research from FutureNeuro! Our team has optimised lab-grown motor neurons using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to model ALS. After testing five coating matrices, they found Polyethyleneimine to be the most effective for neuron growth and maturation. This not only improves the reliability of lab-grown neurons but also highlights critical differences between ALS and healthy motor neurons, paving the way for better disease models and faster treatment discovery. 🔬 New research sheds light on blood-brain barrier disruption in drug-resistant epilepsy! Involving researchers from FutureNeuro, this multi-centre brain imaging study spanned Ireland, England, Canada, and Israel, using advanced dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI to examine blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity in people with drug-resistant epilepsy. The findings revealed significant BBB disruption in brain regions linked to seizure activity, confirming earlier animal studies and paving the way for therapies targeting blood vessel integrity. This research could pave the way for a new therapeutic approach for managing epilepsy in the future. Epilepsy affects 60 million people globally, with one-third unable to control seizures using current medications. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eiRc3aNb #FutureNeuro #EpilepsyResearch #Collaboration #Innovation #BloodBrainBarrier #Neurology Research Ireland Chris Greene Claire Behan Matt Campbell Colin P Doherty Trinity College Dublin Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)

Last week, our Digital Health Innovation Lead, Laura Brady, and Clinical Investigator, Susan Byrne, participated in a pivotal policy workshop on Genomics and AI, hosted by The Academy of Medical Sciences and Royal Irish Academy. This workshop brought together stakeholders from across Ireland and the UK to discuss the implementation of AI into genomic medicine, focusing on current practices, effective governance, and regulation. Participants identified key research priorities and outlined policy actions to guide the safe and impactful application of AI in this evolving field. We look forward to sharing the full report early next year! #AI #Genomics #DigitalHealth #GenomicMedicine #HealthcareInnovation #PolicyWorkshop #FutureOfMedicine Olga Piskareva Research Ireland Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)

🌍 The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) is leading a transformative initiative to connect and unify diverse epilepsy-related datasets—from clinical records to EEG, imaging, and genomics. This collaborative effort aims to uncover deeper insights into the many forms of epilepsy and improve treatment strategies globally. Our Deputy Directory, Prof gianpiero cavalleri, highlights, this project will enable more powerful analysis, helping researchers better understand the different forms of epilepsy and how best to treat them. With the integration of AI and machine learning, this big data approach is set to drive real-time monitoring, personalised treatment, and more precise diagnoses. The ILAE’s framework will help to ensure that these datasets are ethically managed, standardised, and accessible to researchers worldwide, particularly in low-resource settings. This is a crucial step towards more inclusive, impactful research that bridges the gap between data scientists, clinicians, policymakers, and the people affected by epilepsy.
