The new Alzheimer's Society of Ireland’s Activity Lodge has officially opened in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford. Designed as a space for local people aged under 65 who are living with young onset or early stage dementia, it offers a range of programmes including art therapy, music sessions, cognitive exercises, gardening and social events. “Social connection, physical exercise, life-long learning, good nutrition and creativity can slow the progress of dementia. That is the focus of the Activity Lodge and it is a great boost to all of us to have it in operation” - Sally Veale, a social worker with the Memory Assessment Support Service. The evolution of roles within Public Health Nursing and community nursing is making a difference in the lives of patients. Clodagh Brackett is a Student Public Health Nurse based in Blackrock in Cork city and is attending UCC. Clodagh gained experience of working in both the hospital environment and in the community while completing a Graduate Nurse Rotation Programme. “There’s a great variety of work in the community and you get lots of support from PHNs and from RGN colleagues who are always willing to help. I enjoy the autonomy in the job. You have your own caseload and there is continuity of care for the patients.” If you would like to work in one of our Community Nursing Teams register at https://careerhub.hse.ie for weekly job alerts.
