"As I wait to be seen, and the weeks go by, I start to weigh my fear of looking like a pirate against my concern of the infection spilling into my bloodstream leaving me open to sepsis (which I can’t fight without a spleen), not to mention infective endocarditis which my cardiomyopic heart and regurgitating valve may struggle to survive. In the case of my particular tooth I believe the risk of infection moving into the bloodstream is low. But as time goes on, while I wait for an appointment, my cumulative risk increases. I am a product of our siloed healthcare system where my care is spread across different hospitals both public and private. In fact, if this current wait proves too long I may have to seek private care, pulling myself out of the public arena where I have put in a lot of time and effort making myself and my complex history known. We can all agree our current healthcare system is overburdened, but could an AI driven app allow interested patients with co-morbidities to ascertain their own unique cumulative risk?" 📲 In my latest article I make an argument that an AI-driven health risk calculator app could empower patients, especially those with comorbidities, by providing personalized risk assessments as they wait for appointments. 🦷 There is an app which calculates the appropriate amount of money you should leave out for the Tooth Fairy based on international statistics for gender, age and location. Great article in the latest edition of the Irish Medical Times by Michael McHale on the Menopause Society of Ireland's inaugural conference which brought together experts to discuss current care and future advances in treatment. Health Innovation Hub Ireland's Director Dr Tanya Mulcahy PhD spoke about the need for more research specifically focussing on women’s health so that menopause can be better understood. Dr Mulcahy is also the founder of FemTechIreland at Health Innovation Hub Ireland . “When it comes to menopause we’re very much only touching the surface of where we should be,” she told IMT. “There’s a lot of research that could be done – we’re just scratching the surface at the moment". Strategies are everywhere nowadays, there’s one for eating, for sleeping, certainly for exercising, people can’t even keep to schedules without having a 10 step strategy to help them. But there are times when a strategy is vital, and that is workforce planning. I’m no expert, but my misspent youth did include obtaining a Masters in Business Studies (yes, back in the day when they handed them out willy nilly). If I recall my Biz Org class correctly, a business should think in four categories: 🌟 Superstars - must keep ⚙️ Business as Usual - people essential to running the business 📤 Outsource - what work can be fielded out to other experts 🗑️ Obsolete - what work can we drop altogether A good business will review these four categories every 1-3 years. It struck me, how often are we doing this review in healthcare, every 1-3 decades?
