Exciting news for Ireland’s blue economy today with the launch of The Irish Seaweed Association at Trinity College Dublin, uniting industry, researchers, and policymakers to unlock the potential of regenerative ocean farming. 🤝💡 By leveraging Ireland’s natural resources and expertise, the ISA aims to drive environmental leadership, create jobs, and support responsible innovations within the blue economy. 🌿🌊 The association is chaired by our very own Gareth Murphy, Project Manager for our Óir Na Farraige projects and seaweed division at Simply Blue Group. Gareth said "The global seaweed industry is projected to reach €22 billion by 2028, driven by the increasing demand for sustainable food and a multitude of other algae-based products that form a key pillar of the bioeconomy. With over 7,500km of coastline, Ireland is uniquely positioned to become a leader in regenerative ocean farming, helping to restore marine ecosystems, and supporting coastal livelihoods." Excellent news to end the week on!  The UK government is consulting on key reforms to the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme for AR7. These proposed changes aim to boost renewable energy deployment and support floating offshore wind - all while ensuring value for consumers.  They have also confirmed commitments to support multiple Test and Demo projects. Last week, Óir na Farraige launched an exciting initiative with Bord Iascaigh Mhara - Ireland's Seafood Development Agency’s ARC (Aquaculture Remote Classroom) to inspire young minds about the world of seaweed and sustainable aquaculture! 🌱🌿 Over the coming weeks, our Seaweed Manager, Gareth Murphy, will introduce primary and secondary school students to the incredible potential of seaweed; how it enhances biodiversity, absorbs carbon, and improves ocean health, as well as its many uses in food, cosmetics, and fertilisers.
