🔵 Transparency International unveiled bold new standards to make money in politics cleaner and fairer worldwide. This 2024 was the biggest electoral year in history. But have you ever wondered who really funded these campaigns? Corruption in political finance sneaks into politics through illicit funds, opaque donations and shady companies. While money is essential for political participation, a lack of transparency can allow affluent vested interests to exert undue, disproportionate or even criminal influence on politics and policymaking. It’s time to close the loopholes that allow electoral corruption! Our new standards provide a blueprint for reform to mitigate corruption risks and promote integrity of, at a minimum, the financing of national-level political parties and election campaigns. ➡️ Learn more: https://anticorru.pt/37z

📢 Transparency International Ireland has released the "Weak Links" report, uncovering vulnerabilities in Ireland’s corporate frameworks that facilitate illicit financial flows. Edited by Alexander Chance and John Devitt, with contributions from Paul Egan SC, John Mulligan, Elspeth Berry and Dr Jim Stewart, the findings highlight the urgent need for reforms in corporate transparency, data accessibility, and enforcement mechanisms to combat money laundering and #corruption effectively. In addition to stemming the flow of dirty money through our financial system, strengthening these systems is vital to uphold Ireland's financial integrity and reputation. 💡 Read the full report and recommendations at https://lnkd.in/eZhdSSAG #CorporateTransparency #IllicitFinance #AntiCorruption #Ireland #UnitedAgainstCorruption

❝We're seeing a quiet revolution of how fast the whistleblower rules are getting expanded on a horizontal level in legislation, much deeper than one can see in the EU Whistleblower Directive itself.❞ Speaking at Transparency International Ireland and Integrity at Work event, Dr. Vigjilenca Abazi, our Co-Founder and Executive Director, highlighted the role litigation will play in the next five years in whistleblowing. 1️⃣ Who can benefit? Vigjilenca described the "legal mess" created by EU Member States "doing things very differently" which results in whistleblowers having "very different legal experiences" depending on their country. 2️⃣ What can be covered? We can expect tensions between the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union based on what falls under the Directive. 3️⃣ How can it be applied? The most interesting cases to look out for are related to reporting channels, given that the Directive doesn't create a hierarchy between internal and external channels of reporting. This is particularly important in cases of state capture where relying on EU institutions will potentially be more affirmative for whistleblowers. ❝The European Commission is quite discontent with how most Member States didn't manage to transpose the EU Whistleblower Directive.❞ Our Fellow Dr. Simon Gerdemann described the discontentment of the European Commission towards EU Member States because many "don't understand what they're doing or are refusing to transpose some of the requirements". 🔴 Most importantly, the Commission is displeased with the "so-called company group privilege," which it sees as circumventing the Directive. 🔴 The Commission is "very discontent with most EU MS not having whistleblower protection in the national security sector."

Highlights included Eliza’s discussion of her forthcoming research paper supporting the adoption of an American-style whistleblower reward program to fight economic crime in the U.K. and Jennifer’s new nonprofit Psst.org geared at empowering #tech #whistleblowers and developing technology to aggregate whistleblowers and allow them to report wrongdoing collectively, thereby avoiding the first-mover problem.
