🌞 Advancing Renewable Energy through New and Innovative Solar Applications in Kerala The Government of Kerala has set an ambitious target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with solar power playing a pivotal role. However, the limited availability of land in the State, competing with social and economic activities, poses a significant challenge. Innovative solar Photovoltaic (PV) technologies are essential to overcome this hurdle and maximize land utilization while advancing renewable energy goals. GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), under the Indo-German Solar Energy Partnership - Innovative New Solar Areas (IGSP IN-Solar) Project, is collaborating with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE, GoI) to promote land-neutral and dual-use New and Innovative Solar Applications (NISA), had also selected Kerala as part of this initiative. The Focus areas include Agrivoltaics (Agri-PV), Floating Solar PV (FSPV), Canal Top PV (CTPV), Rail/Road Integrated PV (RIPV), Building Integrated PV (BIPV), and Urban PV (UPV). From Kerala, the cities of Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi have been identified for pilot studies to implement NISA projects. To drive this forward, ANERT and GIZ organized a half-day stakeholder discussion session at Thiruvananthapuram. The session focused on the findings of the pre-feasibility study done, challenges for implementation, mitigation strategies, and strategic planning for capacity expansion in Kerala. The event was inaugurated by Dr. B Ashok IAS, Agricultural Production Commissioner & Principal Secretary Department of Agriculture, and Vice Chancellor, Kerala Agricultural University. Sh. Narendra Nath Veluri IFS, CEO ANERT delivered the keynote on the relevance of NISAs in Kerala. Mr. Bernhard Kreutzberg, Head of Solar Projects GIZ India, Ms. Toni Zhimomi, Energy Advisor GIZ India, Mr. Arun K A, Director Deloitte, Dr. Adersh Ashok, CSIR-NIIST, and Mr. Sivaramakrishnan President, KREEPA, shared valuable insights on the potential and future strategies for NISA technologies. The workshop had participation from key institutions such as College of Engineering Trivandrum, TKM College of Engineering, Mar Baselios College of Engineering, alongside officials from the Energy Management Centre, Department of Environment and Climate Change, Department of Electrical Inspectorate, and the Institute of Advanced Virology, actively participated in the session. Their involvement underscored the collaborative effort needed to drive innovative solar solutions in Kerala. Kerala is poised to lead the way in innovative solar energy solutions, contributing to India’s renewable energy journey. Let’s power a sustainable future together! 🌍 Narendra Nath Veluri IFS Toni Zhimomi
