"Everything in climate is highly interdependent." That's the highlight of this post. We had our first session at Climate Ninja by The Sustainability Mafia. And, Johann Fernandes, founder of climateXcapital held the session. He introduced us to an amazing simulator in climate, En-ROADS. This simulator helps us to understand the current dynamics of climate based on the data it's retrieving from multiple sources and it lets you take a closer look at what the future would look like if you 'change' anything that leads to reversing or worsening the climate change. Refer to the screenshot below: 1. We were given a current & future scenario of global temperature and GHG emissions alongwith a baseline, and the task given to us was to ultimately bring down the temperature from +3.3 degrees Celsius below the red dot by 2030, and we can also see the temperature by 2100. 2. You can play around with the whole simulator to a level where you see the consequences of any change in our solutions, policies, population and economy. Key highlights: 1. There is no one thing that's responsible for climate change, and to reverse it, multiple alternatives are required to work in harmony. The elements are interrelated and highly dependent on each other. For example; increasing coal's price won't necessarily mean that people will shift to renewables, it speculates the struggle of people with their operations based on coal. Similarly, increasing renewable energy rates won't make a huge difference in the climate (temp), it means that in India even if renewable energy is established, it needs the establishment of access to it, which is a good infrastructure. Overall, increasing and decreasing elements depend on the current state of the countries, governmental policies, solutions and institutional involvement. 2. It is not easy to go below the baseline for many reasons. But if a holistic approach is taken, things can be turned in favor of this achievement. If element A is changed by max, element B might only show a change by a few degrees and this suggests that there's another element that requires our attention. 3. In the future, solutions that are still in lab, their breakthrough will bring out a competition between alternative solutions. A chance to lookout for better yet climate-reversing services and products. 4. Interrelations are important, while you understand the consequences of several elements playing together, you would also have to look at global and local levels. Countries behave differently and a country is made from its people, laws and practices & cultures which all together are responsible for a particular change in climate. 5. The last and the most important point. Our deeds are problematic for other creatures in the world, and we need to think about what and how we are doing in our lives. Every bit of it, I must say.
