Last week while in Singapore I had the opportunity to visit the Bezos Earth Fund Bezos Centre for Sustainable protein at the National University of Singapore. Professor Liu Shao Quan and Research fellow Lu Yuyun were kind to host me at the NUS Department of Food Science and Technology which houses the center and took me through the various upstream, downstream and analytics labs. Of keen interest was the work on #biomassfermentation using #sidestreams from #foodprocessingindustry as we also are working on it. As the #alternativeprotein industry grows, the demand for #fermentationproteins is on the rise and so is the need to bring down the cost of #feedstocks. On this we had an in depth discussion on #sidestreamvalorization which can lead the way for bringing price parity and #circularity in the commercial production of alt proteins. At TERRAMATTER as we are working on the same concept and we look forward to work along with the Bezos center and NUS Department of Food Science and Technology towards technological convergence leading to scalable business in the future. #sustainability #biotechnolgy #upcycling #circulareconomy #foodtech #agritech #cellularagricutlure

In Indonesia , for securing #foodsupply of the nations almost 280million population, tens and thousands of acres of #peatland has been cleared for growing rice , corn & #palmoil plantations in the past several years. These peatlands which have acted as natural #carbonsink for thousands of years when destroyed, turn dry and have caused many #wildfires in Indonesia for past several years. Not to mention the tons of underlying carbon that gets released in the atmosphere . There is an urgent need to create #alternative #foodsystems that can meet the #foodsecurity of such vulnerable ecosystems without compromising on the #biodiversity . #alternativeproteins from #fermentation technologies could be that light at the end of this tunnel. fermentation farms can be setup independent of region, climate, rainfall & can produce essential #nutrients in a scalable form in much less time compared to nutrients we uptake from #plantbased & animal food. TERRAMATTER uses fermentation technology that can use carbon as a source of food by developing alternative proteins which can be used as #functionalingredients for making alternative meat & foods. The #Hydrocow Project: It envisages to produce whey protein via #precisionfermentation from microbes fed with carbon dioxide & Hydrogen instead of sugars. This project being run by a consortium of Solar foods, Gingko bioworks & University of Groningen was recently awarded $6Million by European Innovation council's #eic Pathfinder program. This is great news for the #carbon2protein segment as more & more interests are emerging to develop technologies around this concept that involves using a harmful pollutant like CO2 to convert it into an essential nutrient like #alternativeprotein .
