Building the secure, sustainable, and just future of food, in the world's largest democracy.
About us
The alternative protein sector is at the forefront of global food innovation, with major benefits for people, planet, and profit. Making foods that taste the same or better and cost the same or less than their animal-derived counterparts, with vastly lower impacts on planetary health - now that’s *smart protein*. At the Good Food Institute India, we’re laying the groundwork for this sunrise industry, and demonstrating a model for a more secure, sustainable, and just food system in the developing world. GFI India’s team of experts across science and technology, business, and policy works to build the smart protein sector from the ground up in the world's largest democracy. We build pivotal networks, conduct and freely disseminate high-impact research, and provide critical advisory support. By working with governments, entrepreneurs, large food and biotech corporations, philanthropies, universities, and other partners across the food supply, we’re putting sustainable protein on the menu.

📰 A recent study in The Lancet estimates that AMR will claim over 39 million lives globally in the next 25 years. Casualties of up to 11.8 million are predicted in South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh between 2025 and 2050, according to a collaboration of researchers forming the Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) Project. Feeding a planet of 10 billion people by 2050 is one of the biggest challenges of our time. But what if we could dramatically reduce the environmental impact of our food system while meeting this growing demand? 💡 A new independent life cycle assessment by The Good Food Institute and EarthShift Global offers compelling evidence that plant-based meat can be a key part of the solution. This comprehensive study, the largest of its kind, found that plant-based meat has an 89% lower environmental impact than conventional animal-based meat across 18 key categories! 💥 The three-day Bengaluru Tech Summit united policymakers, entrepreneurs, and researchers, among others, for several engaging sessions and showcases! Team GFI India was thrilled to see #smartprotein take the spotlight in high-level conversations, reflecting its growing importance in food innovation and biomanufacturing. 🥩 Dr. Rajesh Gokhale delivered an insightful session outlining the strategic roadmap aligned with the #BioE3 policy. His case study presented how smart proteins can address India’s rising dairy demand, showcasing the government’s strong commitment to driving the biotechnology revolution forward. 🎯 Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, a trailblazer in the biomanufacturing sector of India, shed light on the #BioE3 policy. She explained how this policy could revolutionise biomanufacturing for food and feed, while also enabling more sustainable approaches to tackling disease and nutrition through cell-based fermentation. 🚀 Adding to the momentum, Dr. Jitendra Kumar of Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) underscored the massive opportunity for India to lead the smart protein revolution. He stressed that developing these technologies domestically and achieving economies of scale would be pivotal in making them economically viable. With such forward-thinking leadership, India is well on its way to defining the future of food and biomanufacturing on the global stage. 🤝 We are elated to announce that GFI India and #ICRISAT have formalised their commitment towards furthering the development of resilient protein solutions by signing an MoU! 🤝 🎯 The collaboration will focus on advancing research and business opportunities and integrating climate-resilient crops into alternative protein solutions. Through capacity-building programs, resource sharing, network access, and establishing a Centre of Excellence, the joint efforts aim to empower startups and drive growth in India’s smart protein sector. 💡 Our collaborative efforts have already begun to bear fruit in the form of a joint research project that has been selected for support from Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, under the Science & Heritage Initiative (SHRI). The project is set to analyse the potential of proteins made from #millets as a suitable alternative to animal-derived egg proteins. 🌏 As the global consumption of animal-sourced foods increases, public health threats such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), zoonotic diseases, and other food-borne illnesses are predicted to rapidly accelerate. AMR, a phenomenon in which microorganisms develop resistance to medications that were once effective in treating infections and diseases, poses a significant healthcare challenge. 🚀 The indiscriminate use of antibiotics in animal agriculture, particularly in countries like India, is increasingly recognised as a critical problem that needs multi-faceted solutions. Alternative proteins are a SAFER BET as they do not require antibiotics and can significantly reduce human-livestock contact. 📖 In our latest policy brief, Radhika Ramesh outlines how #smartprotein can avert dangerous risks to public health while providing safer and sustainable nutrition. 👉🏽 Dive right in: https://lnkd.in/gds-DUP6 Arghadeep Saha Vidvatta Sharma Astha Gaur Ojasvi Uppal #publichealth #policybrief #alternativeprotein
